Yes it should be visible :) your hair doesn't need to be super blonde at all, as long as it gets to an orange shade of some kind you'll be able to go red :) they should be able to do that in one session.

If your hair is virgin I highly suggest Loreal hicolor permanent highlights to dye it! lifted my black hair to bright red

Did mine from black to red couple of weeks back, I resorted to bleaching it ( I know v v bad lol) then used manic panic vampire red, you could try a colour remover to remove the black dye
