I think they look great!
When I do gradient nails, I paint the whole nail the lighter colour, wait for it to dry, and then use a makeup sponge to gently dab on the second colour.

Did you put both colors on a sponge and dab the sponge on your nails? that's what I see on a lot of pictorials.

I say the only thing that went wrong was the base not being completely dry, it still looks really pretty though :)
