Here's the problem...red is the most impossible dye to remove or dye over. It's going to show through once the brown starts fading, and sometimes even when it's freshly dyed the brown will retain a reddish tint to it. your best best would be to try and lift as much of the red as possible before you just dye straight over it. Other than that, you may want to check out the John Freida foam color, it works really well and doesn't fade, my mom has been using it to dye over her grey hair for probably the last 6 years, and she hasn't had a single problem.

Awesome thank you! I was planning on washing it out with dish soap because it fades like crazy every time water hits it. So I'm going to try to get it to that watermelon stage and then cover that. Do you think that will work?

That will certainly work better than just throwing some hair dye over what it is now =) you may also want to try a vitamin C hair mask or a color lifter like Color Oops in addition to the dish soap.
