How to keep nails in shape?

My nails are always disgusting. the thing is, I go to the barn for horseback riding twice a week. that just ruins them. I don't want any expensive gel or Shellac things, I don't even care if there is polish! just how to keep them well and make polish last maybe. routine for how to keep them in good condition?
