Are you supposed to go to your doctor first to try to cure acne or straight to a dermatologist?

You want to see a dermatologist for your skin, or an esthetician.
I would see a doctor just for a derm. recommendation, recommendations are usually a lot more cheaper.
Dermatologists do have to be doctors before becoming Dermatologist though.

I went to my doctor first and she was actually able to prescribe me some very great acne creams right there. I would just go to your doctor first! (Which you would have to anyways to get a recommendation for a dermatologist )

Depending on your insurance, you either have to see your primary care doctor for a referral OR you can just go to a dermatologist of your choosing without a referral. (HMOs usually require referrals, PPOs do not. Socialized medicine also usually requires a referral.)
Your regular doctor can examine your acne and deduce its primary cause (e.g. hormones, inflammation, malnutrition, hygiene issues...) and recommend treatments based on this, or they will refer you to either a dermatologist or gynecologist.
A dermatologist will create a more in-depth treatment plan if your acne is severe, and may perform in-office procedures like extractions. They will also check you for suspicious moles while you are there.
A gynecologist takes care of most aspects of female health, and will treat hormonal acne by finding a suitable birth control. They will also do yearly pelvic exams to prevent things like cervical cancer.
The easiest course of action is to talk to your primary care doctor first, and see what they say. Even if your insurance doesn't require a referral, sometimes it will cover more of the cost if you have one.

The creams worked! I visited a derm also, but the only thing he said he could do for me, other than the creams my doctor prescribed, was accutane. Tried it for a week and it gave me killer headaches, so I decided not to take it.

But the point is that your doctor can prescribe you the same creams a derm would.
