Regular trims help keep damage to a minimum.
Using looser pony tails/elastics will help minimize damage as well.
Less frequent washing can help too, especially in winter.
If you color, having a professional do it will again lessen the damage.

I cut my hair to a pixie, then in two years I whacked it off again because it was already to my brastrap. What I did is I never used heat, drank more water, tried to eat more protein, and once it started getting a little longer I conditioned the ends only. If you don't use any heat or dye your hair, you may not need to trim it. I never did, and it grew better because I didn't cut an inch off every three months. You only need trims if your hair is getting split ends.

Yes I use mane and tail once in a while and my hair always feels thicker after using it :) & I colored my hair a lot recently but I always made sure to condition it :)

Massaging your scalp with the pads of your fingers (not your fingertips, which would be more like scratching) may also help stimulate hair growth. The thinking is that massage stimulates blood flow to the scalp which in turn stimulates hair growth. I wash my hair every other day, so I do my scalp massage when I'm washing my hair on wash days, and on non-wash days I do it when I'm at my computer as a sort of mini-break from staring at the screen.

Noo please do not use mane n tail. that does absolutely no good for human hair. it's just all the wax in it that makes it feel thick. it also weighs down hair making you think it's grown. it's not ph balanced for human hair or scalp. it will cause your hair to become dry & brittle. mane n tail is one of the biggest hair growth myths. please do not use it anymore.

Hair growth is based on genetics, the health of you & your hair. so the only way to promote growth is to keep yourself & your hair in good health.
Do not just go taking pills (including biotin). You can end up with side effects serious enough to put you in the hospital. always ask your doctor first.
Some tips to promote growth:
get trims regularly (split ends will go higher up the longer you wait & then you'll have to cut off more hair)
drink a lot of water
use as little heat as possible
always use a heat protectant, I recommend It's a 10
don't brush your hair while it's wet
do hot oil treatments (I use coconut oil)
use a deep conditioner (I use Aussie 3 minute miracle)
use hair masks (store bought or diy)
try a leave in conditioner
keep in mind that there are no miracle products or methods. good luck in growing your hair! :)
