When I got blonde highlights the hair dresser recommended me to get a purple shampoo. I never used one so what does it do? And what's a good brand.

It'll counteract any brassy tones or colours you don't like, leaving it more of a cool shade of blonde rather then yellow blonde. I use a lee Staffords one and Avon also makes a super good one that is a blue based purple shampoo so it also removes orange tones.

How long do I leave it in

Well, I know people will say this isn't recommended but I'd leave mine in for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the shade of blonde or silver I wanted. If I left it for an hour it'd leave my hair with a silver/lilac tint for a few washes then would come out to my blonde after about a week. I'd at start with 10 minutes or so on dry hair and see how it works for you so you can decide if you'd like to leave it on longer the next time. I'm not sure if it'll work to remove a lot of the green because it's mainly to remove orange and yellow colours but if you can find a green toner you'd be able to cancel out the red. Or if you wanted to you could try a light ash blonde dye to remove some of the red as it'll have a green base. I hope that helps a little bit, in my head I feel like I just made no sense lol! ☺️

If you wanna leave it in for a long time I'd say get a purple conditioner instead of shampoo, so it's providing moisture while it's toning. I use ion brand "cool blonde conditioner" which you can get at Sally's for like $6. I leave it in for 30 mins to an hour and it makes my hair several shades cooler.

I actually recently found my holy grail purple shampoo! You can get it at salons, or ulta - AG silver toning shampoo. I leave it in for about 5 minutes, and I use it twice a week. The only thing is purple shampoos can be drying, so make sure to use a good conditioner and a leave in.
