I have a horrible cold sore on my upper lip! It's been there for almost 3 weeks now! I put Abreva on it every night for the first 2.5 weeks, but it didn't help at all. I've stopped putting it on now, as I was thinking maybe it needs a break to heal, but so far it's been just as bad as ever, and it's super embarrassing! Is there anything I can do to make it heal quicker? Thanks!

Tea tree oil!! Never put any type of creme/moisturizer on a cold sore because you'are nourishing it! You want to dry it out with something natural like tea tree oil!! Also, you never want to put any type of healing patch on your cold sore because that will cause humidity which can lead to infection or growth of the cold sore! Let it breathe!

I use Zovirax... It kills the virus, dries the sore then helps it heal.

Try using E45 cream you can get it prescribed from your doctors or at a chemist.

Go to your doctor--you need Valacyclovir (Valtrex) to clear it up. It's the herpes virus, so that is really the only thing that will "cure it".

^agreed. It's been weeks of OTC treatment. Time to see the doc and call in the big guns.

Jocelyn is right. Also, never put an astringent like tea tree oil on a cold sore. A cold sore is an open wound with inflammation, adding an astringent will prolong the sore by over drying and irritating it.
If it has lasted that long, see a doctor.

My doc gave me a yearly prescription so I can take it daily. I usually just take it when I feel one coming on. No idea how I got cold sores but it happened so you have to deal with what you've been dealt!!
