You wear them as a shadow "base" as opposed to a shadow "primer". Although a lot of people use them as shadow primers (including me). Paint Pots are especially important for when you're using loose pigments. It helps the pigments stick & gives the most vibrant, ultimate color payoff.

The 'best' is rather subjective as it depends on the look, skin color, personal preference, etc. I have the Soft Orche paint pot which I use as a tan/neutral base. Using different colors can help intensify other colors as well.

I have painterly which I use as a base to intensify colors, it's an off white color but like Erin said soft orche is also a really good one!
