I agree with using an ash based colour because green will contradict the red tones and I do agree with needing a good toning shampoo after the highlights. She's pretty spot on :)

I agree with everyone else that your friend is smart. Levels 1-5 of natural hair color the NRP (natural remaining pigment, the color left in the hair when lifting) is red. So to cancel out the red undertone you would need to use a green color to neutralize it. But like in your post if you go grabbing whatever ash color off of the shelves you don't know what their ash base is.. it could be green or blue so if you picked up one with a blue base you'll end up having a violet tone. Since blue and red make purple.
*From my understanding, I'm still a cosmetology student so I could be wrong*
