I currently have have my naturally black hair dyed red but it took a very long process to get the red to show up in my hair without bleaching it. ( I had to dye it around 4-5 times to get the colour I wanted) now it's summer and I want to dye it brown. I was just wondering is it just as hard to dye black hair brown as it is to dye it red?

No it is hard to dye black hair to red with out bleaching it coz the red colour won't show up that well.

Black and red are the two hardest colours to get rid of. It would be easiest to go brown because the black should fade to a brown over time but also because for bright bright red hair you'd have to bleach your hair to a platinum blonde first (which would take maybe 3-5 trips to the hairdresser) and would seriously fry your hair. Your talking losing maybe 4 or more inchs if your hair doesn't completely break. It also takes a very long (and a little ugly) growing out period inbetween visits.

Bright reds are difficult on black hair but any bright or light color usually requires bleaching black hair - what shade of brown are you going for? It shouldn't be as bad as a bright red it should show up just fine as long as you aren't going for a super light brown like a golden brown would be easier with bleach but like a chestnut brown would be pretty easy to do.

I was think a medium chocolate brown but I don't know if I need to buy a lighter colour of box dye so that it would show up because surely if I just bought a chocolate brown colour dye it wouldn't show up on my black hair?

A dark chocolate probably won't be very noticeable but a medium brown should be good and shouldn't need bleach under it.

Is your hair currently red right now? Like someone mentioned, Red is the hardest color to get out. In order to color over your red hair you will need a color darker and something slightly ashy to cancel out the red. but with box dye the chances of your hair coming out a nice chocolate brown is slim to none. I would recommended going to a professional for this. This is what we ccall a "Color Correction" and can be tricky for even us to tackle.

Yes it is. I though it would be a bit risky doing it myself. I never realised red hair was so troublesome! It hard to dye red and also hard to get out! Ahh! I was thinking about getting it done professionally as well because I quite fancy getting balayage.
