I have been dying my hair purple for almost a year and started out using Manic Panic Purple Haze and honestly had no complaints. I would have to lighten my hair of course but would only have to refresh my color every 4-6 weeks (and re-lighten my roots every 12 weeks or so). In the recent months I decided to try out some new brands after reading great reviews. I tried Special Effects and had a holy terror staining experience (like a be out in public, get too hot and end up with purple running down your face holy terror). I was really surprised since it had so many rave reviews. I was scrubbing my hair multiple times a week with a clarifying shampoo the first few weeks to stop the staining so I waited longer than usual between colorings & deep conditioning to give my hair a break. I was in Ulta & saw the Jerome Russell Punky Color in Plum and thought I would give it a try. I relightened my roots before using and followed the directions but I feel like the color turned out really patchy and uneven. Should I try using the Punky again since it has been so long in between colorings to make sure hair is coated (my hair is short but thick), try another brand, or go back to old faithful Manic Panic (which is the color you are seeing in my profile pic)?

Personally I love SE, but some colors stain/"bleed" more than others. I found deep purple didn't stain or bleed but pimping purple did like crazy. I think it really depends on the color.
I love manic panic too, but I do like special effects more.
I hated punky colors though. It faded quick, all the colors bleed like crazy, my pillow cases are stained because of it.
But it really depends on your hair. What works on you might not work for others and vice versa

Alyx- Pimping Purple is what I used! I may look for the Deep Purple! I am used to some rub off (its inevitable with colors like purple) but this was insane! It stained towels, pillowcases, the tub, hats, headbands and even the inside the arms of my sunglasses. Crazy!
I have liked the results with Manic Panic but if I can find something a little longer lasting it would be great!

Yeah I had plastic white glasses while I had purple hair, once I used pimping purple they were 90% purple lol.
Definitely try deep purple if you get the chance, it didn't bleed much, just if I got caught in the rain or something during the first week or so but after that it didn't stain towels or anything

I'm glad you created this.thred. I am dying to.go purple when I get back home (no pun intended). what did the color look like once it faded? I once used midnight blue by manic panic and it faded an ugly green color.

Netty- when I use MP Purple Haze it just fades to a light purple almost a lavender if I let it go without refreshing the color (like if I was waiting to re-lighten).

Brooke- I tried the Ion Purple but found it thick and harder to work with to get an even color. Is there a trick to getting an even application such as mixing with another brand/dye? The shade of purple was very beautiful. I just couldn't get an even color.

Honestly I hated ion. It was thick, never even coverage even when mixed with conditioner or other dyes. It also stained my hair, and it's still slightly there in my hair a year later. I personally hate it lol.
