I used to have butt length hair and it wouldn't curl then. I even put it half up half down, so there wasn't too much to curl and it wouldn't work. I just cut my hair to right above my..boobs lol.. And still, no curl. I tried curling with a big curling iron, a skinny one and I even tried with a straightener (why? Idek) but can someone give me some hints.

Hairspray. So much hairspray. I have a friend with pin straight hair, and she can get perfect spiral curls from a curling wand with the help of a million gallons of hairspray.

Maybe your hair doesn't have very much volume.

Headband curls! Wrap your hair around a headband when wet. YouTube it for a better description but my hair doesn't curl either.

All you have to do is use some product on your hair. Usually some sort of texturizing mouse or spray helps to lock in a curl. Or regular hair spray will work - spray all over your hair lightly and see how that goes :)

After creating each curl pincurl it up so it has chance to set, you should end up with a full head of pincurls then leave them to set for 10 mins or until just before you go out :)

If you're determined to use a curling want for each small section spray with hair spray, curl on high heat, then when you let it go curl it back up an pin it to your head. When you have done this and all the curls are cool let them down and spray with hair spray again and style as usual, they will stay but will probably be quite crunchy.
I recommend a wet set which is when you put up your hair while its wet so it will set in that shape. I think you should try pin curls but before you pin it up you should apply a gel or a setting lotion which will really help with hold.
Here is a good pin curls tutorial : http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=noFBBeSLViA&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DnoFBBeSLViA
