You could try using a heavier moisturizer before applying foundation. There are foundations out there suites for dryer skins as well.

You Should Exfoliate all your dead skin from your face and moisturize, and apply a primer then apply Foundation.

Always prime before applying your foundation then when your full face is done mist a setting spray over it. There's Model in a bottle & Mac Fix+ or if thats a little too pricy try Elf or Maybelline.

A big suggestion I would recommend would be exfoliating and then moisturize, a face mask weekly, and invest in a good primer! Cakey face is usually in the technique you used to apply your foundation more than your skin type. If you are using a dirty brush and excess product you will more than likely get a cakey face. If the problem isnt in your application process, then the problem is probably that you are not using the right foundation or moisturizer for your skin.
For dry skin look for a tinted moisturizer and a foundation specifically for dry skin.
Try a brown sugar with coconut oil mask (1 cup brown sugar (preferably organic), 1/4 cup unrefined coconut oil, 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional) , 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional), the cinnamon is for extra warmth and increase circulation.) This scrub will exfoliate your face and when you let it sit on your face will moisturize your face.

Exfoliate the dry patches off your skin, try to use a hydrating foundation like Neutrogena Healthy Skin ($10+) or Bourjois Healthy Mix Gel Serum ($20). Using a fdtn made for oily/combo skin will almost always accentuate dry patches no matter what you do.
You can also try a setting spray, one like NYX's Dewy Finish Finishing Spray ($8) would work well for you! It sets the makeup enough to give a natural amount of glow. Use moisturizer before anything! :)

Use tinted moisturiser instead of foundation, exfoliate twice a week and always apply moisturiser before your makeup, or a moisturising primer, a lot of primers are designed for oily skin and are mattifying which will only make things worse so be sure to get the right kind! X.

Moisturizer (I really love CeraVe)! Gently exfoliate but not everyday. I would also try a different foundation and use a primer. I like nyx, rimmel, maybelline, benefit (my favorite).
