How many of my fellow Beautylish fam are aspiring makeup artist who are ready to begin building their freelance kit? I've been learning and teaching myself makeup for almost 4 years now and I'm at that point in my life where I'm just ready to get out there and get my career as an makeup artist going.

I am beginning to build my kit. I'm going to start with the easiest of supplies an work my way up. I'm going to begin buying my disposables, my mixing tray, spatulas, etc. then I will begin with brushes. I'm really going to take my time in choosing products such as foundations and concealers because I really want nothing but the best in my kit so I really have to do my research. If anyone has any suggestions or tips I would greatly appreciate!

Who else out there is ready to start building their kit?! What are you buying first?

Hi, I don't really have any tips but I was wondering if you had any for me, I only recently found my love of make up & fashion (over the past year or so) and think I would like to pursue w career in this. I was wondering how you taught yourself, the best websites etc if there are any good begginer classes to start off? Any help would be much appreciated as I really want to hit the ground running with this :)

Hey Liz!
I learned a lot about makeup from YouTube! I would just watch and practice. I practiced something different everyday. One day it would be liner the next it would be blending etc. the key to teaching yourself is just to practice! I bought books to also teach me some stuff. Scott Barnes and Bobbi Brown have amazing books! I haven't done any online classes because I'm attending a makeup artistry school in Florida next summer, but I've heard of a few online schools although I haven't looked into them yet but here's just a few I've heard of:
QC makeup academy
Elite pro
Hex makeup artistry

I would just say practice your heart out! Practice on yourself first and then once you've mastered that practice on friends and family who are of different skintone, eyeshadows, ages etc practice will be your friend.

Here's a list of some really helpful YouTube channels:
Kandee Johnson
Gossmakeupartist
Lilpumpkinie05
Queenofblendingmua
Xsparkage

Kandee Johnson and Gossmakeupartist are two of my faves because they have a lot of great tips for beginner makeup artist. And Kandee shows a lot of pro artist tips in her videos. They even have videos on how to become a makeup artist which I found really helpful.

Just do your research, practice A LOT and you'll be just fine!

Good luck!

Hi Lindsey, just wanted to say thanks again for all your advice, I ordered Bobbi Brown - Makeup Manual & Kevyn Aucoin - Making Faces, & I've been watching all the people you suggested on YouTube & some others :) I've been looking into the QC Makeup Academy & was just wondering what you know/think about it? I'm really interested in doing there master makeup artistry course, but wanted to make sure its legit as its a lot of money, also if the certificate you receive upon completion holds any real weight in the industry? Do you know anyone who has done their courses?

i don't believe that those certificates hold any real weight. its good to have but its not going to get you in the door faster qv shows u the basics but u can learn thay stuff free online! its all about practicing and networking.

Hey Liz! Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has done this program. I have done research on this school and it seems pretty legit to me. Also check out Elite Pro school that one is online as well. I think that having a certificate is really important because some people really look for stuff like that. Also having a certificate can put you ahead of someone who doesn't have anything put personal experience.

I am starting to build up a kit too. For foundation and concealer i got the palettes from the camerareadycosmetics site. There is an RCMA and a different brand that I can't remember off the top of my head. They are really good because you get a bunch of different shades and them you can figure out what colours you use more and then you can go out and buy the larger size of that certain colour. The only thing is that they are cream. I love them but i also want to start getting some liquids.
