So my hair has some faded red in it & I'm thinking of making it purple. Will I need to strip the remaining red? or can I dye over it & have a nice result?

Yea otherwise it won't come out evenly.

How faded is the red? Purple would cover red easily. But the more red your hair is the darker the purple will be.

Its turning a gross brassy pumpkin red if that makes sense lol I just don't want to cause more damage & I'm not sure if stripping the red is bad for my hair

Stripping the red would do a lot of damage. And red is really hard to get out. I'd use a semi permanent purple like manic panic, special effects or punky colors to cover it and that way you don't damage it. :)
