I had the same problem for a long time. Then I got a new curling iron, it's amazing!!
I don't even need hairspray anymore and they stay in for the whole day. Hold on I'll take a picture of what I have and the brand curler.

I use a curling lotion... I should like an old lady but I use to do pin up hair on hair like yours and it lasted a whole day at the theme park I worked at.

I'm no expert, but I curl my hair regularly and my can be stubborn but I have found ways to enhance and extend my curls: Be sure not to heat treat it before you attempt to curl (even as much as 24 hours beforehand)...also, I wouldn't apply hairspray only after it's been curled. I would try using a product BEFORE or DURING the curling process. Be sure to use a heat styling product/something that is actually geared toward holding curl. I recently discovered a new line at Sally's that's pretty awesome, Vintage Glam - they have a curl holding cream specifically designed to use with heat styling tools.
Also, be sure to be patient while you're curling, whether you're using a heat styling tool, foam curlers, etc. Curl slowly and hold/secure firmly...if using an iron USE HEAT PROTECTANT, and hold the iron in place for 15-20 seconds after curling hair around the wand.

I hope that helps Corinne - I've gone through curl struggles myself and am constantly trying to find the right 'system' for me. I've used many irons and as far as curls go - I really believe it's more about your process and products vs. iron brand. That's just me though. :)

I use a flat iron, I have the same hair I think where it's always super silky and soft which people always comment on but boy it sucks when curling! Flat iron curls are the only thing that have stayed in, sometimes even until I wash it next! ;)
