Can you use an eyeshadow?

Probably not. You're going to need a foundation that's two to four shades darker than your skin color depending on how drastic you want it. Make sure you blend it really well :)

I never have I wouldn't know how that would work. You can just use a darker foundation/concealer if you can't get your hands on a contouring product :)

I use an eyeshadow and it works fine, and saves money!
Just make sure its the right shade and that you blend it well!

If you can find a matte shadow with the right shade then you can use it. it needs to be kind of grey toned instead of orange like a bronze. you can also use a foundation, Concealer or powder that is a few shades darker than your skintone. they also make contouring powders. there aren't many drugstore options but the nyx one is good.

If you want you could get a contour palette from bh cosmetics, costal scents, nyx, sleek, makeup forever, smashbox, & anastasia. That's all I can think of atm.

'Hi Beauties, I have seen an abundant number of threads on highlighting an contouring. While it is an art, most people make it more difficult than it actually is. Hopefully my explanation will diffuse several misnomers and make the process much more approachable

Contouring and highlighting is a very powerful tool. What you are really doing is actually sculpting your face. Contouring can make your face look thinner, younger, it can lift your eyes, give you prominent cheekbones a thinner nose, and structured jawline.

You have to use a color that looks like an shadow. Think of it this way, Imagine that you have a blazing torch over your head...what will you see? Shadows. It is that dark deep brown grey tone that you need to contour with, so ixnay on the bronzer. It needs to be a very very flat muddy color. Think of the color you would use on your brows...it is that that flat muddy color... That's what's going to give you curvature.

If you want to use a liquid foundation,it can be done, but in my opinion, a cream is the better route to go.Why? Because a cream will blend beautifully with liquid existing liquid product. If you use sculpting powder, choose one that is the same tone in an eye shadow or powder form. The color you choose should be at least 2 to 3 shades deeper than your foundation. If it isn't dark enough, it will just end up looking like blush. It has to be blended so it mimics a shadow, not a line. If you go lighter, it just doesn't have the same effect.

When we contour, one is creating the illusion of an oval shape, and where you place the contour product depends on what your actual face shape is. I have a great general purpose highlight and contour routine that is a no fail for any face shape. Here goes:

Look at your face straightforward in the mirror and imagine a line from the corner of your mouth to the tip of your ear. Start contouring from your ear and work down, not out. You want it to look darker at the hairline and then blend it out. Next, think of a very long extended triangle where at your earlobe is about a centimeter thick and then it comes down to nothing. What you are aiming for here is a beautiful blend that becomes a shadow under, not extended past your cheekbone. You have to use a brush isn't any wider than your pinkie finger, that's why I prefer to use my Kevyn Aucoin Large Fan Brush. You don’t want it to extend all the way down to your jawline. This is where I see people make just the gravest of errors. You want to create that fine indent underneath your cheekbone.

Now, cheekbones: Imagine a line going from your nostrils to the outside corner of your eye and then up up through your temple. That is the other area that you need to shade. It is this particular portion of blending that gives you a really beautiful cheekbone. It is also this portion of blending that helps to lift your eye a bit. It’s quite simply a line that goes from the corner of your nose to the corner of your eye and extends out to the temple. There is another line going from the outside corner of your nose, the inside corner of your eye and out. It is this region that you also want to contour. Under no circumstances do you want to contour this specific area if you are underweight because it will only amplify that very hollow around the eyes. If you want to, you can contour the sides of your nose as well. Changing the shape of your nose is a bit different, and if you guys want, I can detail that subject at a later date.

Blush: Always apply your blush above your contour line. It'll lift the face for a more revived and perky look. Then just blend the two so there isn't a line of demarcation.

Highlight: Here's the deal on highlighting, When you highlight, you should only see shine, not actual color. Here's where I see a lot of mistakes made. If there is an overt and deep color to the highlight product that you use, it completely shade shifts and messes up the dynamic of the contour that you created. Most highlighting products are white or gold, so you shouldn't see any of that heavy white or gold tint when applied to to the skin. Don’t highlight anywhere with wrinkles because you'll just accentuate them. This is where a fan brush comes into play again. to Apply apply dots or dabs of highlight because it blends lightly, and it won't move the product underneath. You want to apply your highlighter inmost cases in these areas: Slightly above the cheekbones and straight on the temples, the eyes and the center of the forehead and mid point on the chin. You can also apply it to the Cupid's bow (the area on your upper lip). When applying to cheeks, blend highlighter on the highest point of the cheekbones, up towards the temple and along the high point of your collarbone. You can also apply highlighter to the center of the nose, the cupid's bow,the corners of your lips, and the inner corner of your eyes. My favorite highlighting products: Kevyn Aucoin's Celestial Powder in Candlelight, and Dior's Rose Diamond and Amber Diamond (Totally gorgeous highlight with no overt color. It's just a beautiful sheen.)

Keep in mind, you do not have to highlight and contour. It isn't a necessary thing for all. Sometimes just applying blush will give you all the shape that you need. Ladies and gents with deeper skin tones can naturally use the contrast of their own skin's depth to act as the contour and just apply highlighter. Ladies and gents with very deep skin tones should be very careful with contour product because most of the time it ends up looking like one has a beard(So true Alma, thank you)

Proper technique for highlighting and contouring, unless it is for film, print and/or stage work should be very very subtle. I'll attach a few pics so you can see the placement that I am talking about. Hope this helped.  :)
