People grow up used to seeing images of celebs and others being edited and photoshopped and having all their flaws taken away and thats constantly what we see. But when we finally see the celeb without makeup or being edited its usually in an article titled "kim k looks terrible!" And is critised for not being edited. We get used to this and expect it in our daily lives. Then we get told that this cream or this brand of makeup will fix your flaws! We are constantly being told that only when we are edited we look good. I mean instagram, everyones filtering pictures of themselves now (I am a culprit of this) and becoming upset that we can't look like that constantly. And then there's facebook where you see your friends in a totally different light to how their lives actually are but we believe this illusion the internet and media gives. This idea that everyones life is perfect except yours but it will be if you buy this or that and then we get upset when it doesn't work.

Teenagers are especially susceptible to this because there's this psychological phase that we all go through where we think everyone is looking at us all the time called the 'Imaginary Audience' by David Elkind, you could add that in too its a good theory.

Thank you for clarifying what an eating disorder is, people think the media causes it, but in reality it might be aggravated by the media but its nothing really to do with it. Its like saying depression is caused by emo music.
