What is the difference? What purpose do they serve differently, if any?

Basically, nothing. Ask Carolyn H if you can find her, she has an explanation for it.

I prefer loose powder to set my makeup at home because it doesn't have any "binders" which can sometimes add cakiness to your foundation. But I do use pressed powders for when I'm out for the convenience. I use pressed powders which add no coverage because again, I don't want to add any cakiness to my foundation. I'm just trying to blot out any oily breakthrough. I like Nars Crystal Pressed powder. Some complain that this pressed powder is hard to work with because it barely transfers any product onto the sponge. But I think its perfect. I don't want to see or feel the product on my face, I just want the oil to be diminshed without looking too matte or powdery.

Pressed powders are easier to carry around with you, and do not make your bathroom's walls look beige :)
