I really need some help. I dyed my hair black around august. it's just too dark and I want it to a dark brown. just lighter. but I really don't want to bleach or strip my hair. what should I do? would that sun-in hair lightened possibly work?
just something to lighten it a shade or two?

Adrienne...trust me on this one, I did the same thing. I rocked the Bettie Page do for a couple years, when I decided I wanted to go back to my natural dark brown, I found out the hard way it's not worth the risk. DO NOT bleach your hair! A, it won't work, B, your hair will literally snap off, become very pourous, C, Your hair just turns in to a hot mess, no shampoo, conditioner, or product can fix it! Looking back, I really wish I had listened to my hair stylist when he told me the best thing you can do is find a really moisturizing shampoo with sulfates...over time the color will fade. I wound up cutting off all my hair. My profile picture was taken before I tortured and cut my hair.

You CAN bleach it. Just dont leave it on long. I'm a stylist and I know it's hard to do. Just lighten it to a dark reddish color which it will do after 10 minutes and apply a dark brown. Or you could always try washing your hair with dawn dish soap or make a paste out of baking soda and your shampoo. They will fade the color faster.

My stylist recommends Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint S &C...it has sulfates, but won't dry your hair out...whatever you decide to do...I wish you luck <3

I am a stylist I suggest having a stylist do it they can get the bleaching on fast and evenly or do it yourself but leave on just for 10 to 15 mins with a 10 or 20 vo. you only need to lift two level or so and apply the color you want over it .

I'm a stylist and I personally would do heavy foils all over your head lightening to the shade you want and then toning it from there. There will still be some black left behind but having the foils will help it blend better as it grows out

I'd just do a soap cap (lightener, 10 vol developer, conditioner). Apply allover on freshly clarified hair. Watch carefully. In under 5 min the black will break up considerably without damage and without weird tones. I absolutely suggest going to a pro, though.

Save yourself time and money and go to a professional. Haircolor is chemistry and having the knowledge is essential in color correction. Sun-in is not going to do anything for you. Color will not lift color ... Only bleach can and ppl with box colored black will lift very uneven meaning you'll need toning. If you don't mind highlights, that's also an option as to not have to bleach your entire head.
