Hi everyone!

I just wrote out a such a long post and I have no idea what happened to it... Anyway, I'm new here and I have a few questions about my foundation.

1) With any foundation I have ever used, it seems to accentuate any imperfections in my face like dry patches, pores and fine lines (I'm 30, so I don't have a TON of fine lines, however in natural sunlight with foundation on it looks like I do :/). Will using a primer help quite a bit, or will it be a waste of money? What primers are good for dry skin?
2) I just bought and used L'Oreal True Match Lumi foundation today and I really like it (I like the coverage it gives, plus it seems pretty good on my dry skin), however as the day wore on it started to look quite oily which isn't a problem I usually have. Would you recommend using a translucent powder on top? I'm worried about it looking too cakey, especially with my already dry skin (despite moisturizing day and night). I also just bought UD's setting spray (the All Nighter one), and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail so I haven't ever used it. I'm not sure if that will make the shininess worse? I am open to foundation suggestions (med. coverage, natural looking, good on dry skin). :)

All I really want is perfect looking skin, regardless of what light I'm looking at it in (in the sunlight my foundation looks pretty terrible - to me it just looks really fake plus makes my pores and fine lines look so much worse). Probably too much to ask.

Thanks for taking the time to read! Any advice will be much appreciated. :)

I'm a guy, and I have facial hair to deal with, and I can definitely attest to what you say how some make ups will only highlight the imperfections.
I recently discovered BB creams, and they work wonders. Not only do they have the pigment you'd like in it, but they are moisturizing, they can come with anti aging properties, they contain strong SPF, and they have primer in them. I have found my best coverage using something like this. BB creams will also prepare the skin (because of the primer) for any other make up you want to put on top. I don't believe it looks caked on, but if there's a bad blemish or something you want hidden extra well, just a dab a bit of regular foundation or concealer on top of it. Powders can help as well, if you run into the oil factor. It's nice to look for the make ups that are oil free, and for sensitive skin, even if you don't have oily or sensitive skin. You know that these products are generally healthier for the skin, and they often times are less thick and pastey looking.

Anyway- give it a try. BB creams can be found anywhere you normally buy your make up. I don't notice any major differences between a designer brand or a cover girl either. So just pick one up and experiment :)

A primer will help. the drugstore has some great primers now so you can try a cheaper one before dishing out a bunch of money. elf has a few different ones, the normal mineral primer is my favorite and make my skin look less dry. the moisturizing one us moisturizing But I don't feel like it help my foundation as much. also the rimmel perfect pro one is good. as for the oily I can get that with some foundations and I reach for oil blotter sheets. clean and clear makes one that at cheap. they absorb the oil. I don't like to powder because of my spots But when I do I use the rimmel stay matte. it doesn't make my dry spots worse and I don't feel cakey. just don't pile it on. the primer should help with the oiliness as Well though. as for the setting spray I love it. on foundations that I get oily in I apply a thin layer of powder then spray and it will take away any powderiness and make my makeup look great and last longer and not break down, which can also cause it to look oily. hope this helps!

Have you tried exfoliating? That's especially important in the winter when there's no moisture in the air.
Also, try using a thicker cream at night and really working it into the skin that's been helping me a lot lately.

I definitely recommend using a primer under foundation just to even out texture and fill in some fine lines. I like the Smashbox photoready primer and even like the ELF mineral one- my all time favorite is the Hourglass mineral veil even though its quite pricey.

It's important that the primer you use works with the foundation you use- meaning a silicone based primer has to be used with a silicone based foundation- think of it like mixing oil and water- your foundation will glide right off otherwise.

As for the loreal lumi- I've been loving it for my dry skin lately it really brightens it up, but I agree it can come off looking oily after a while so I find that I have to set it with a powder like the mac mineralized skin finish, or the revlon photo ready.

I personally don't think setting spays work, at least from my experience. But the right primer and really buffing the foundation into the skin and setting it with powder have kept my foundation on for 16 hour shifts before

hope I helped a bit :)

Let me start of with saying welcome to beautylish, I would defenitly use a primer to smoothen your skin out, and a setting powder would be great to set your foundation cut out hine and make it last longer, the urbandecay all nighter will give your skin a dewy finish witch looks great hope this helped.

Hi Cassia and welcome to Beautylish!
Just to introduce myself, I'm kitty and a fellow make up junkie with dry skin and fine lines just like you.
If you feel like you ever need help, don't ever be afraid to ask anyone! Especially our moderators who are make up artists, that being said...

Will a primer help? Yes primers can make a heap of a difference, especially for dries skin types. Remember primers act as a smooth canvas for our make up. That being said, my favorite primers are
Palladio Herbal Face Primer. Why? This is a complete smashbox dupe, it's herbal, and half the price.
Lorac's sensitive skin primer. This is my holy grail primer at the moment, it leaves my skin feeling so silky, smooth and soft, helps with fine lines and definitely with dry patches. It's definitely amazing.
Coverfx has an anti aging primer... this is on my next to get list. But it is AMAZING. It has vitamins and other little goodies to help with the skin.
Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer, a bit pricey but it gives the skin a silky finish perfect for your foundation.
Bareminerals, it feels and could be a silicone based primer, but it never failed me even on days that my skin was flaking off.
Keep in mind that the way you apply foundation AND the foundation type has to do with how it appears. Generally LONG LASTING foundations cling onto the skin over time, we have dry skin so our skin already does enough clinging for us and we don't need anymore of it.
For my skin I personally love using bareminerals, and tartes mineral foundation. Liquids just don't do too well on dry skin in general, you probably will have better luck sticking to creams and powders. I love powders because they leave my skin looking like porcelain.
You might want to invest in a spray for your make up, powders will accentuate dry skin since these setting powders are initially meant for oilier skin types.

2) I just bought and used L'Oreal True Match Lumi foundation today and I really like it (I like the coverage it gives, plus it seems pretty good on my dry skin), however as the day wore on it started to look quite oily which isn't a problem I usually have. Honestly, I don't feel like L'oreals Lumi foundation is all that great. If you really want what it gives you ( Medium coverage, beautiful for dry skin. ) I REALLY recommend trying out Lumene's BB Cream. It just DOES a better job overall, L'oreal does get oily throughout the day, and I use Nars Setting Powder and I have used Ben Nye, it's just not that great of a foundation for me. I find better coverage with Lumene, it has nice things in it great for our skin. I don't know what it is about the Lumene BB cream, but I always reach for it instead of reaching for my Lumi foundation, I actually don't even know what to do with my Lumi foundation... I try to use it but it's just bleck. Lumene definitely has more coverage and does come with it's own skin benefits. I would return Lumi while you can lol and get Lumene and try it out, it does run a bit dark though. It does have vitamin C ( Great for scarring and marks ) so I love to use it. I'm always reaching for it. I literally only need a drop for it and get more coverage, I've actually used it under my Lumi foundation just to get good coverage.

I've attached a piccy of both the primer and BB cream if it helps. ☺

As far as the lumi goes I had the same issue and heaRd the same thing from a lot of other girls. try the loreal true match it dosent break down like the lumi. can you set it with powder yes. just lightly dust over the oily prone areas. for your pores as far as primers go nyx pore filler is good. try a bha (salicylic acid) exfoliant to help keep your pores clear. clean and clear makes a leave on treatment. also incorporate an aha (alpha hydroxy acid) to exfoliate any dry skin, helps even out texture and reduce fine lines. the alpha hydrox line is nice

Welcome to Beautylish Cassia!!
Definitely exfoliate as Carolyn said. That will get rid of dead skin cells. When doing your makeup, do it in natural light. What cleansers and moisturizers do you use? Perhaps they are not the right products for you. What is you daily routine?
I am 31 and have combo skin. I have tried many products. Neutrogena naturals and the pink grapefruit cleansers are wonderful. OIl of olay is also good. I use a thicker moisturizer at night after I shower (and wash my face in the shower to benefit from the steam). I use a light moisturizer plus Garnier BB cream for day and little if any foundation. I get dry around my hairline and my nose, oily on my forehead. The BB cream is great and I don't have to worry about it. A great and inexpensive trick is to use witch hazel as a toner after you wash. It gets rid of any dirt and residue your cleanser didn't get, plus I have noticed (at least on my skin) that it helps with preventing my face from getting really oily. As far as your foundation, it could be that you need a toner or a different moisturizer, and or cleanser. Or maybe, that particular one isn't right for you. A good way to try different ones without spending all that money, is to ask the company for a free sample.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful replies! Just to answer a couple of the questions, I do exfoliate once or twice weekly using an Aveeno facial exfoliant. I cleanse my face nightly with Neutrogena Naturals moisturizing facial wash and I really like it. I use Olay's anti-aging night cream afterwards. In the mornings I use Aveeno Positively Radiant moisturizer. When I remember to use my night and day cream for a few days in a row without missing any applications, my skin does well (looks supple, isn't nearly as dry) so I don't think it's a problem with the moisturizers not being "strong" enough for me, if that makes sense? However I still notice dry patches after applying foundation, even if without it my skin doesn't look dry. Make sense? I also do have Garnier's BB cream and I find the same issue with the dry patches and having it make my pores look huge.
Someone mentioned that the foundation and primer have to go well with each other. I am thinking of returning the foundations I bought (I bought 2 different shades that I wasn't sure about) and getting just the regular True match. Are the shades the same throughout the line? For example, I found that the N1-2 Lumi works better then the N3, so would I get N2 (or 1-2 if it's combined) in the original True match formula also? I would really like to avoid using powder if I can, but I don't like the super dewey look on myself. I will get some (like, dewey to the point it looks oily) Anyway, I got off topic - if True match is water based, what primer works well with that? I would like to avoid a really expensive primer if I can.
Also, what is the best way to apply foundation on dry skin? I have heard buffing it with a flat top brush isn't good because it creates microexfoliation, and can stir up flakes etc. in already dry skin. I have also ordered a BB sponge and I'm pretty excited to try it out but I hope that it works. I'm sure I can return it unused though if I decide to try a different method of application.

Okay, thanks again guys! Your advice is very much appreciated.

I think that is more the foundations fault than that you need a primer. The foundations I'd recommend are YSL teint touché éclat (it blurrs any imperfections and makes your skin look flawless, I use it on my 50 year old mum and her lines look almost gone)
I would recommend setting the lumi foundation with powder, as long as you don't put on too much powder and too often, it won't look cakey. :)

Primers are our friend! For dry skin Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer is great. I've also used Lumi Foundation and I liked it as I like to look luminous, but there are other options out there. Powder can be used, I'm 42 so I have same concerns of it settling. I use it sparingly then aet with a spray like elf mist and set spray, it's $1 at walmart. In fact it appears a lot of people are using face setting sprays in lieu of powder. What did you use to apply your foundation? Neutrogena Healthy Skin has great coverage and a higher end foundation that I love Laura Mercier Silk Creme found at Sephora and I think Ulta.

Okay, so I think I have found something that helps with the dry patches at least. I have been mixing my moisturizer and BB cream (I use Garnier). My skin tone definitely still doesn't look completely even, as I have quite a bit of redness in my cheeks), but at least it doesn't look dry and adds some colour! I will try putting the foundation on top tomorrow and see how that goes. :)
