I read that they coat your hair and don't allow other nutrients to actually be absorbed by the hair, but I'd like some clarification too :)

Yep @grace that's what they do!! It makes your hair look shiny at first, but overall it's doing harm.

Grace said it best. Over time they definitely contribute to buildup. My hair hates it. It keeps from moisture pentrating my hair which results in it feeling like rough straw. You can find it in both conditioners and shampoos.

I get really bad build-up from products with silicone. plus my back will start to breakout because as it rinses down your back the silicone will actually clog your pores.
