I recently started going to the gym to work on my abs, when I don't get a chance to go I do crunches at home. Since then my abs are sore and I thought it was normal but they feel like cramps. Today I wake up and sure enough seems like I started my period which isn't normal for this time yet. Anyone kno wy??

Well you are probably not used to this. Maybe you should start slower and do little more every day. It is not good when you for example watch tv your whole life and don't many exercises and suddeny start going to the gym. Your body wasn't probably used to do many phisical work and now it suddenly started. It is sending you message to slow down and to start training step-by-step. :-)

Exercise and eating healthy changes your period a bit and when you get it. But it's totally normal. Also, if you do crunches and you get a cramp the next day without your period, that's normal too! It's just your abs "forming". To prevent soreness the next day, lay on your stomach with your hands out by your boobs and your elbows bent, then push up. That should stretch your ab area and your back(:

Hi Mari- I'm a Personal Trainer so I thought I'd answer your questions. Ab exercises won't cause cramps on their own- but some soreness is to be expected. As mentioned above, sometimes starting a diet and exercise program can make your period a bit irregular for a short time. Also, as long as you don't have any health conditions, it's perfectly fine to start a moderate to high intensity program even if you were previously not doing any physical activity. Make sure that you're eating a sufficient amount of calories and sleeping at least 7-8 hours at night. If you're sore to the point that you can't move or if the soreness lasts for several days, scale back a little bit. Always take one day off per week from training to let your body recover. And last but not least- I'd like to suggest trading in those crunches for planks- they are much more effective and will tone your entire midsection faster. :)

Thank you Polly and Kelsey. I'm actually very motivated to get a flat tummy and I will definitely be doing planks:)

I'm not a personal trainer but I'm on my own weight loss journey and have done and am always researching. You can't spot reduce. You have to get rid of the fat over your stomach to get a flat stomach. You could do a 100 crunches everyday if you don't burn the fat over your abs, you'll just have a rock solid Core with fat over it. You need a mix of cardio and strength training (and of course eating healthy) to reduce your body fat percentage so your abs can show.

Also don't do crunches everyday. You need to let your muscles repair themselves.

Thankx Nala, good tip. Is there anything good to help reduce my tummy fat?? its not a lot its just a small bulge tht I dislike.

You can't just get rid of stomach fat. Through cardio/strength training and eating healthy your body will lose fat. Working your core will tighten everything so you may appear slimmer however the fat will still be there. Try doing HIIT or interval training to help you reduce fat. I do YouTube videos since I don't have a gym membership.
