I understand what exfoliating is but how do you all do it? A face scrub? I don't have the $ to buy the clarasonic so other methods for dry skin?

Yes a face scrub will work. I like the Neutrogena Rapid Clear foaming scrub. It works well for my dry skin. Look for scrubs with beads as opposed to beads with shells or harsh pieces that could scratch your skin.

I bought a $6 face brush from ulta to gently exfoliate with my normal face wash but I also use a scrub after I cleanse.

Your skin actually exfoliates once a week by itself. ( Food for thought )
So it's more beneficial for drier skin types to exfoliate.
You want to use something gentle ( like jojoba beads ) to exfoliate with. Lots of people like using exfoliaters with shells because they think exfoliating is more physical than anything which is not true. ( You are actually causing micro tears in the skin and creating a bacteria breeding ground ).
Usually any thing with salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy ( AHA ) or BHA will exfoliant enough as it is. There are two forms of exfoliation ( Physical and chemical ) so if you have a wash with any of these they will do the trick. However chemical exfoliant a can be more harsh so use them less frequent.
You can literally buy jojoba beads super cheap at a health store or in bulk online and you can add them to your cleanser. They're very gentle.
Another DIY exfoliant is oatmeal. Just throw some in your blender and grind them up. The next time you wash your face take a handful and run your hand under water in a closed fist to wet it. And in gentle circular motions exfoliate your face. Oatmeal is one of the most gentle exfoliant a out there ( and gets rid of redness and pulls oil out of the skin ) so it's my favorite.

I actually use solely oat powder (prepared as kitty mentioned) to cleanse these days. It's by far my favorite method. I had an epiphany during the first week of use lol can't hurt to try it :)

For exposition that's not harsh or abrasive go for a glycolic acid facial cleaner. I rotate one out with my normal scrub about once or twice a week. It helps slough off dead skin without scrubbing you raw. I swear by it!

You can pick up a simple exfoliating brush from sephora for only five dollars I used to have one but it fell on my marble floor and broke :\ & also the face scrub I use is the biorè acne scrub & it works great also is very true with getting rid of pimples within three days.
