That happened to me after bleaching my hair, I tried to dye it red and it turned lilac and dark grey, I had to go have the color fixed by a professional.

Jenna, when going from blonde to brown, you have to use a filler color. Color needs something to grab onto...like a base. and blond pretty much has littler to none pigment in it. if your going to tacjle tthis yourself, then I would suggest getting a warm brown color...something with gold in it. you don't want anything ashy or neutral. if there's a Sally's by you then try to get color from there. its a little bit better then box dye. but your best bet is to go see a pro. it may cost more, but at least you know its going to look good.

Yes you need something to replace the red pigment in your hair for it to look a warm colour. As a hairdresser if you had come to me I would use a light red brown first to fill and then cover that colour with the one you want. Going to a pro would be very beneficial at this point but will cost a pretty penny.
