Contouring isn't set in stone, you contour to cater to your specific face shape.

If you have a small nose, you wouldn't contour the sides of it.
If you have a smaller forehead, you wouldn't contour there either.

Contour and highlight go hand in hand to sculpt your face and change your features slightly. I suggest looking up a chart for your face shape, but also one for different nose shapes

Agreed with Carolyn. The general idea to contour is to give the illusion of an oval face.

This contour chart is by Kevyn Aucoin, and he's just amazing! Many people use contouring to give their face a more angular look, as well.
