How about without the amonia. It's just like bleaching.

Just follow the instructions.

Don't do anything the instructions don't recommend or you could be in a mess.

I'm a cosmetologist, my mother also used to be a cosmetologist and we've both worked as hairdressers. I just got my license in May and have far less experience obviously. My mother worked in a salon for about 15 years. She has told me you can mix in a small amount of bleach into your haircolor to add a small amount of extra lift but I have never tried it. I don't recommend someone without a license trying this.

I know I was wondering if adding bleach to hair color would make it lighter.

The results will be unpredictable if you do mix the color with the bleach, I do not recommend experimenting with it.

Or is there a way to color hair without the harsh chemicals?

Hair color is a ton of chemicals for most brands and bleach is even worse. And what you were thinking of doing could just mix chemicals that shouldn't be mixed. In Cosmo school what they tell you to do if you are unsure is follow manufactures instructions.
