How much do you tip at a hair salon?

NY Boston area (not sure if other areas are different) generally 15 - 20%, if you are getting a special or groupon you should still tip on original price, don't for the assistants too... Shampoo girl and such :)

15-20% like everyone else said. But as a hairdresser myself I try to give a little more than I would at a restaurant. Because if you think about it... someone doing a good job on your hair is way more important than someone doing a good job bringing you food and drinks. I'm not saying that servers don't work hard for their tips or that I don't tip them well also. But I know a lot of times when I was working in a salon people didn't even tip me even though they went on and on about how great their hair looked. Which is part of the reason I'm not working in a salon at this time. I guess what I'm saying is if you really like your hairdresser and plan on going back to her tip her well, because she might decide she can make a better living somewhere else like I did.
