I'm just getting into make up and I'm trying to start a collection of essential products but I'm feeling so overwhelmed by all the choices out there! Recommendations for where to start would be greatly appreciated!! I have combo skin (oiled T zone and dry cheeks) I'm fair to med skin tone. Primers, setting foundation, concealer OH MY! Lol thanks!

Mandi, welcome to BL =) may I ask how old you are to start off with, it will help me better to recommend stuff for you. And what kind of budget do you have for makeup (everyone on here knows I buy very cheap stuff)

In edition to what Michele asked. also, what are the things you are trying to enhance or cover. IE. problem skin, or just touchup. everyone doesn't need everything,. it depends on you..

Thanks for the kind welcome! I'm 27... I started a new job where I'm trying to look my age I have a very young face. I do have blemish problems but don't like the cakes feel of make up and have worn make up before but never actually knew what I was doing lol... IM looking for more everyday natural make up feel. I would say my budget is medium. I wouldn't go with high end stuff unless I knew it was great but I have the naked palette and been playing around with that and I have gotten a few drugstore products too. Hope this helps!

For example, I myself don't use bronzer or any highlighting stuff. Plus I don't know what contouring is. I rarely use foundation or primer. Speaking of foundation, Naomi when choosing foundation or bb cream, do you want lighter, same as or darker than your skin tone?

I like revlon nearly naked its very lightweight a natural looking and I love wet n wild mega last matte lipsticks they have every color and they stay on but aren't drying,

I'm a drugstore brand girl all the way.. Oh honey don't worry about looking older than you are. I did think you were younger than your age but that's a good thing trust me. I'm almost 33 and feel special when I get carded lol.

Mandi, make up can be so overwhelming at first, but oh so fun once you get the hang of it! You may want to check out Bare Minerals powder foundation. this is high end, but so worth it especially if you don't like the feel of foundation on your face. it is sold at Ulta and sephora. Rimmel makes some awesome mascaras. Wet n Wild has really nice eye shadows, especially if you want to play around wwith different colors. they are super cheap and good quality. check out YouTube...there are so many makeup tutorial videos on there.

I don't get carded anymore. I'm a hag.. lol.
no seriously tho. ppl say I have a "don't f with me face" and they know that I'm grown. especially after I talk.
but I totally understand what you mean mandi p. and yes your message definitely helped.
to answer micheles question about foundation. you should match your skin tone. when it comes to brown skinned girls it gets a little more complicated because there are so many tones in the face sometimes. then you have to be careful of foundation oxidizing.. so basically they goal is to get a foundation that matches you and doesn't turn orange once it mixes with your skin...
I'm with traci. I actually tried nearly naked twice and it broke me out but whatever type of hormonal malfunction I'm going through now it works really good for me this last week or so. I always liked the finish tho. another option since you have oily skin mandi p, Is cover girl 3-in-1. its great for oily skin..
traci is right. the megalast lipcolors are nice. I don't really like the nudes on my skintone but they are worth trying for yourself.. they are $2.
NYC lipsticks aren't to bold and may be nice for work.
also Revlon is 4.99 at walmart and loreal is $5.99 at walmart. both brands have solid lipsticks that aren't too bold. the shades are kind of muted in my opinion..
the naked pallet is nice and can be all you need if you just want to wear makeup for work..

I don't use primer and such on a regular. if you don't have spots or dark circles you are trying to cover you don't NEED concealer... bb cream/tinted moisturizer is also an easy option over foundation if you don't have problem skin.

Jan 5, 2014

Just to try it. I don't wear foundation much and I notice it's like everything rolled into one.

ELF is a great starter kit for anyone who is new to makeup! If you purchase a kit from them around holidays it gives step by step details to newest products, etc.

I was thinking about the WnW Fergie brand to start with but I'll look into maybelline

Also I LOVE a lot of the Drugstore Mascaras over higher priced items :)

Gotcha Michele. I was just curious. its definitely thinner than foundation. I use the Maybelline one if I use it at all.. some of them are simply glorified tinted moisturizers, if you don't need much then you may still like it. I wore tinted moisturizer for a long time and still do sometimes.
@ mandi, a lot of girls like it (CG 3 -in-1) I'm not oily so I haven't used it. but I think its safe to say you won't be disappointed once you get your match.. :)

I'm an LA colors girl with elf brushes and WnW lipstick lol.

Hell I might just get the maybelline one, it's only a little more than the Fergie one.
