Do you use bronzer to contour or just a darker foundation?

White is highlighting and brown is bronzer

You can use either
Lots of people say don't contour with bronzer, but I think it looks fine

Well, bronzer isn't made to contour, but Wayne Goss says you can use a matte bronzer for a more everyday contoured look. You can use a darker creme foundation or a contour powder.

I've always just used a matte on the cooler toned side for contouring :)

You can use either a darker foundation or a powder, both alphabet slightly different finishes I've found! (Recently started to experiment with contouring and highlighting!) , but there is only a small difference. It depends on your preference as well as skin type! Do you have dry skin or oily?

I agree with Sandra completely, sure makeup has guidelines and proper techniques if you're trying to achieve a certain look but like Sandra said, I think bending the "rules" is needed to find out what works for one individual and what doesn't. I don't think there are any "rules" in makeup, there aren't any in art, just techniques and that's the way I like to think of makeup.
