I usually replace my makeup every 6 months. There is usually a little picture of a container on the product which has a number on it, for example '12 m' which means it's good until 12 months of manufacture. Never use makeup that's too old! It can cause infections and break you out!

With foundation I usually dump it once it starts to separate and/or smell funny. But that is a rare event as I usually finish it off before the expire date. Mascara gets tossed after 3 months. Lipstick I just follow the sniff/texture test. If it smells bad its going to the trash. Texture changes...goes in the trash. Gloss same rules.
