The rule 'bold on the eyes or bold on the lips, not bold on both' has been preached to me since I started wearing makeup. I personally don't agree with it. If I want to wear red lips with a smokey eye, I will. Purple lipstick with a rainbow gradient eye? Why not? I'm curious as to how you ladies feel about this. Do you stick to the 'rule' of only going bold on one or the other? And are there any other makeup 'rules' you break? I say 'rules' because there are no real rules of makeup, unless you're talking about the technique of things (such as a smokey is dark to light, and a smokey with winged liner is no longer a true smokey eye). To take it a step farther, how bold are you when it comes to makeup? Would you leave the house in bright blue lipstick? Or try out metallic brows? If not, what is your opinion on people who do? Would someone's makeup ever affect your opinion on them, or influence your first impression of them? If you were an employer at a non-professional job, would someone's makeup choices affect the likelihood of you hiring them? Of course, there's a time and place for everything. Leave answers to the questions below, I'm very curious about your guys' opinions. 😊

I LOVE this topic haha! I disagree with makeup rules. The names of techniques are crucial like the smokey eye thing. But I don't think there should be rules.
I wear bold makeup when I can, but unfortunately I don't really go anywhere so I don't get to do it as often but I've worn blue lipstick out and purple lips with rainbows eyes whenever I feel creative.
Unfortunately I am currently looking for a job, I'm 17, so there's not a lot I can do. And it definitely makes it difficult to get a job. I went to apply at retail jobs in a mall, and not only do people not agree with my hair (a lot of them tell me if I dye it brown they'll hire me, but it's me and I love it so no) but I've had jobs tell me they won't hire me because I've worn winged eyeliner or not even bold pink lipstick. Jobs definitely do not like creativity it seems haha.

I'm a bit conservative with my makeup as my profile pictures truly shows, so I only go bold on eyes or lips, never both! But I admire the hell out of girls that rock what ever they want! If it affects my first opinion of them, probably yes, but not in a negative why! If a girl is bold and have a matching bold personality I will admire her even more :)

Just to answer a few questions but generally speaking. I HATE RULES!! I literally do not understand why there are rules in makeup. I find that I do follow the rules with the whole "1 thing bold" but I personally like my makeup that way. Doesn't mean it should be set in stone. I also hate rules on limits of makeup tools. I will use what I feel is necessary to achieve my looks.

I'm just now venturing out but I'm a big fan of bold makeup. As far as bold and bold combos, it really depends. If done right it is absolutely amazing, or sometimes it's tacky. I do believe there are some rules in makeup. More like fundamentals and terminology that are the guidelines and the creativity flows from there.
Makeup isn't that important when it comes to forming my opinion about that person. Especially if we have a personal relationship. I do think makeup should be appropriate for certain situations especially if there's a dress code of conduct. And I would only look sideways about someone if they are involved in beauty. For example, I'm going to second guess anyone who is giving beauty advice and they don't wear makeup or it's poorly done.

I also hope Symone sees this and quotes our makeup mommy. She'll know what I'm talking about.

I was once a business consultant/trainer and from a employer stand-point the exterior of an individual is definitely looked at and measured. I'm not talking about a person's weight but if they have numerous piercings, colorful makeup or purple hair. I've consulted business owners in conservative fields where such looks were frowned upon (law, education for example) while the more creative, public service arena its acceptable. I volunteer at a non-profit agency and they don't care if you have a bunch of piercings and rainbow bright hair. I plan on streaking my hair purple this October and the director supports it wholeheartedly. And the head social worker has a sleeve of tats.
As far as what others do...their body/face...their choice. We all can't look alike...talk about boring. When it comes to "rules"...they are meant to be broken. You aren't going to jail for using bronzer to contour. And smokey eye with a bright pink isn't going to send you to hell in a hand basket. Just make sure you blend, blend, blend whatever makeup look ya do.

Oh my god I was just thinking about this topic yesterday! I like to steer more towards a natural look but I totally agree on being bold on top and bottom! I'd like to try blue lipstick, probably for a party, if I have to be completely honest. I need to find it in my country first lol! I do admit that sometimes someone's makeup will make me "think" , but I like quirky, I mostly tend to judge bad application and technique rather than color choices and boldness. Man, I'm just realizing that I'm playing it too safe with makeup! Normally I go overboard with hair color, cut and texture, and do I get looks when I walk around in my small town! But wearing the look with confidence is what will sell it to others! :)
Anyway, if you like full out makeup, what made me think about this topic is the last video Pixiwoo posted on YouTube, the 90s supermodel look... It really inspired me to push my boundaries!
Awesome topic, Regan!

I see makeup rules as more of a guideline but makeup can also be an art and great art doesn't come from conforming. That's all I really have to say about that :)

I've seen girls who wear a bold lip and eyes together and it's just too overpowering! I know this one girl who rocks a blonde pixie cut, but one day she wore a hard rocker dark eye and bright red lip stock and it aged her sooooo much, and we're in High School! Sometimes it can look overbearing, trashy, aging, and just not flattering, but as long as you don't go OVER THE TOP Bold on both features, bright lips and amazing eye makeup can look absolutely stunning together.

This is the best thread ever! It's got me excited!! Lol!
I am a rule breaker. I am always pushing the rules...not just with makeup...with everything. Some things like HAC need to be followed by rules or it defeats the purpose of HAC. I completely disagree about the rule bold lips and eyes together because it looks so good! I love the look of a rich, velvety lipstick WITH dark, dramatic eyes! Let's beak the rules girlies!! 💄👀

I don't like that 'rule' I don't see anything wrong with bold on both! I think it looks good personally. Makeup is art and you you feel like you should create the art of bright red lips and dark smokey eyes then that's great! I don't break any makeup rules in my opinion because I agree that there aren't any unless you're referring to technique. When it comes to how bold I am? Not bold at all. I'm not confident enough to wear anything bold out of the house but I love to experiment with bold looks behind closed doors! I wouldn't leave the house with either because I'm not brave enough to but my opinion on those who do is that I look up to them. I think it's amazing that they're brave enough to wear that! I wish I was more like those people. No, makeup doesn't affect my first impression of people unless it makes me think they're amazingly confident and someone to be admired. And no! I can't imagine any reason why I'd let their choice in makeup affect their chance of getting the job. I'm a firm believer that your appearance has nothing to do with your skill set. Also, if I'm being honest, I'm not sure I agree that there is a time and a place for everything when it comes to the makeup world! I'm not at all trying to argue with you Regan or anything like that on that point! I'm just answering everything as I read it haha I only say I don't agree with that because as I said before, makeup is art and I don't think it has to be a certain time or occasion (night out, club, ballroom, take it how you will) to wear a certain makeup look because it's about expressing yourself! If you're going out to run errands in a sweat suit but you feel like expressing yourself by doing a full face, gold glitter gradient eye look, and black lipstick then I think you should most definitely do that!

Completely understand where all of you are coming from. I agree that sometimes people can go over the top, but I've always admired people who are gutsy enough to wear and do whatever they want when it comes to their appearance. Even if I personally would not wear pink eyeshadow up to my eyebrows, if its your choice, then more power to you! Makeup is an art, and your face is a canvas and as one of my favorite quotes goes, 'Art should disturb the comforted, and comfort the disturbed'. Not everyone will understand your choices, and that's a-okay. Loved both of your looks, MaKenzie and Symone. You guys are always perfection!
@Breeze; I love Pixiwoo! I'll have to go check out that video! I completely agree that confidence is key when it comes to pulling things off. You have to own it. I've also done my fair share of experimenting with hair, blue bangs, Bettie bangs, Alexa Chung style bangs. And while not everyone understood or agreed with my choices, at the end of the day, it's my hair, and they have to accept it. And I totally agree on judging bad application and technique, because even the prettiest colors will look bad if they're sloppily applied.
@Olivia A; that's one of my favorite looks! Dark eyes and a vampy ox blood lip. Let's break the rules!
@Cassidy; I completely see where you're coming from. I agree that there shouldn't be a time for everything; if I want to wear false lashes, gold glitter pigment, and red lips to Walmart at 7 am cause I'm out of milk, I will! Sadly, most employers do not agree. What I meant by there's a time and place for everything was that while looking for a professional job that sets restrictions on your appearance, it's best to try not to push the limits too much if you want to be hired. It's unfortunate that in some cases you aren't able to express your creativity to your full potential with makeup, but sometimes you have to make sacrificed to get the job. I agree with you; if I was an employer, someone's makeup choices would not affect whether I chose to hire them. It's a shame more people don't feel the same. (:

All in the field of makeup and art this is what I'll say Makeup is art but even Artist have to sell paintings.I find that makeup is a limitless art and you continue to learn and experiment to find what works for you.Guidelines are in makeup but if you want to wear or use what you want go for it.Look I'm a person who painted the Beatles inspired yellow submarine on a face and I think out the box when it comes to makeup lol so if you want to mix it up do so just be sure application is up to par. :-)

I mostly got into makeup and I'd say it depends for what your aiming for. I don't believe in rules in makeup. Makeup is like art , and art has no rules. You just draw what you feel. Plus I can't break any rules if there isn't anything rule to break.
But sometimes you have to have your limits , especially if you have a job. If you're going to go bold make sure you don't look like a clown. And make sure it's ok with your manager. It sounds stupid , but some people just thinks its stupid. I love bold colors : Red , purple , yellow , turquoise. Especially on the lips. Why should we hide the creative side??

I say do whatever you want with your makeup, and what you feel comfortable in or what you love! :) it's your makeup, if you like it and think it looks good, who cares what other people think! :)
