Hello everyone!!
So my question today is: What are eye shadow primers used for? What are some of the differences between formulas? And what are some of your favorite eye shadow primers??
Pretty curious about them, never use one, wonder if they are worth the investment?

Urban decay has the best. I believe it's to prep your eye for the eyeshadow color/ make it go on smooth and to help it stay on.

Definitely keeps it on longer, gives it a smooth base. I use NYX jumbo pencil in milk, as do a lot of people. It's white so I just apply a thin layer and it gives the shadow something to adhere to and makes the color more vibrant. And it's like $6!

Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Urban Decay Primer Potion are the my two favorites! They help keep shadows from creasing :) Especially helpful if you have oily lids!

So, the point of an eyeshadow primer is to promote longevity and reduce creasing. If it's a good formula, it won't move throughout the day, and therefore your shadow won't move. There are some formulaic differences, some are dryer, or more hydrating, some are tacky and some are smooth, but they more or less do the same thing. I personally love Urban Decay's, it works amazingly well for me, though I think that's because I have very normal eyelids, I think that the people who don't like the Urban Decay tend to lean strongly in one direction or the other :) however, I also really like the Too Faced Shadow Insurance, which is a little bit stickier in my experience.

Before eyeshadow primers existed, foundation and concealer was intentionally applied to the eyelids with a little face powder- and that worked alright. Then eye primers came along and made things a lot better. I like the UDPP and also think the ELF eye primer and Palladio Herbal eyeshadow primers are similar in texture and more budget friendly. The TFSI is more of a silicone base, so silkier- so probably better for oily lids, I'm not a big fan. LORAC's Behind the Scenes eyeshadow primer is really nice, its somewhere in between the UDPP and the TFSI. I really didn't like Benefit's Stay Don't Stray- it was really wet and creamy and didn't set well.

I'm using a sample of UDPP...I think it's Eden. It really does brighten up the eye and help my eyeshadow stay. I'm eager to try the anti-aging sample next. I've used a paint pot from MAC but can't quite remember if I liked it because when I started using it again, it had already dried out and I wasn't very impressed (obviously, it was old). But may try it again.

I'm sure all of these wonderful ladies have already answered you as to what shadow primers are and their use.
I'd like to out my little two cents and recommend Too Faced's Shadow Insurance. I've tried various primers and found that the ones that have worked best for clients and myself are Too Faced and Urban Decay. Although Urban Decay's primer potion worked well for me, Too Faced made my eyeshadow look more vibrant and lasting.
I would recommend going to Sephora or Ulta and asking for a few samples(:
