I believe this is in the right category...
So, for my 18th birthday I will be looking into getting a tattoo on my ankle in memory of a close friend that passed away several years ago. A lot of people I know do not agree with tattoos so I have NO idea what I'm doing or how to go about choosing an artist/shop. Can Anyone who has tattoo experience either as an artist or just someone who has one help me? I honestly have no one else to go to! :) thanks!

Just look up reputable artists in your area, you can google "tattoo artists in _____", there should be some that pop up with reviews! I honestly know soooo many tattoo artists so I really just look to them for help so sorry I'm not that much of a help. Also, you can actually go to a shop and ask to aw your artists work. They have portfolios you should look through, which are helpful as for getting an idea on what their style and technique looks like! I think what you're getting it for is really sweet of you. I'd love to see it when it's done! :)

Oh cool thanks! I didn't know you could view their work before you actually decided to get it done there... Shows how inexperienced I actually am. He was an amazing person and his death was very unexpected. My birthday is in a few months so I'm just planning ahead right now! Hopefully, I'll get it done! I'll deff be sharing MANY pics when I actually finally get it!

Yes! They should always have a portfolio. They usually have it right in the front, a few huge photo albums full! :) I'm sorry for your loss. I can't wait to see what you get :)

My birthdays in December and I'm going to get one to in my best friends memory. I think I'm going to get " when things didn't go right I went left and you came with me" with her name in cursive. But I still don't know where I want it.

I'm sorry for both of your losses. 😔 but tattoos are a great way to remember one who was close to you. Don't listen to people who hate on tattoos, if it means something to you, that's all that matters. 😊

In his memory I'll be getting a boot with the that of his death on the bottom. A Bible verse was found in his boot when he died that spoke about perseverance in hard times and with that his parents actually created a charity around collecting and giving shoes to children in need. So I feel a small boot would pay a great homage to that and the memory that he left here before he died. I'm also considering adding the reference of the verse with the date of his death or even instead of it. My birthday is also in December! (The 18th) and I'm sorry for your loss and your tattoo sounds like it's going to be very beautiful! :)

Thank you for those kind words. I'm actually sitting here and crying right now because the support for this is something I'm not getting from my conservative parents and friends. They don't agree with tattoos at all and it's so nice to see that someone else agrees and actually SEES the meaning not just some ink. So thank you for the support :)

You're welcome Kendra. I'm sorry, please don't cry! You'll be 18 and you can do whatever you please then. If this tattoo will help heal the pain from his loss, then get it. It sounds like a beautiful tattoo.
I want some tattoos, but I want to be a doctor so I can't get them where I want them, which is ridiculous but you know today's society. 😬

No need to be sorry! Good tears! I feel supported! :) I want to go for my phd in psychology and become a counselor for people with really serious cases so the few tattoos I do want (I have 3 I want including this one for my friend) are in very discreet easy to cover places. I completely understand how difficult it can be to think about your future career and have to worry about something as trivial as some ink!

I will of course be posting mine! At least we know that around the same time they'll be someone else out there getting a tattoo for a similar reason! Although the death if my friend was a few years ago I've been really thinking about the fact that I keep going with life and that he'll never graduate, never turn 18, never go to college etc. So, I feel like having the tattoo would be like having him with me through all those experiences so that although I keep going I know that he's also going to keep going with me even if he'll never get those experiences for himself.

Before I got mine my cousin said when you go looking for places ask for pictures of the artists work and if you like their wor ask for pictured of cover ups theyve done and if they don't do cover ups or have bad cover ups don't use them, I mean I'm sure not all people are bad at tatoos if there bad at cover ups but it does make sense if they can give a bad ass cover theyll do a great job with a tatoo, thats what I went by and mine came out the way I wanted :)
