I have thin brittle nails.so nail polish literally lasts a day on my hands before it chips at the tips. So, the manicurist suggested gel polish. Do you guys think it's a healthy thing? Or will it damage my nails more?

A friend said her nails had started flaking at the top layer. I am probably more worries because mine are already very thin.

Thanks, Rachel! Could you perhaps elaborate a little on the kind of damage and how often you had it done?

Do you mean gel polish like Shellac? I've gotten gel polish every 3 weeks or so for years. I love it. I don't feel it damaged my nails much at all and I'm bad and peel it off myself when it starts to come off.

I agree that gel polish isn't bad for your nails...I'm wondering if your referring to a gel set of nails vs acrylic or something different...I would suggest you not to get tips applied to your nails if they are already thin...this will only cause them more damage...as far as putting gel polish on your nails its the way to go to make your polish last longer.

I think the damage is very minimal, regular nail polish is probably healthier, and nothing is better. With gel, I find the biggest problem is soaking in the acetone. You get foil wraps that only apply acetone to the nail, but it tends to dry out the nail, cuticle and skin around the nail. I treat the skin often to counteract the acetone. My nails however are smooth with the exception of an occasional flake or peel at the tip.

Thanks so much, you guys. This is really helpful. I may have been confused about acrylics vs gel. I was referring to the kind that needs UV light to set.

Just make sure you go to a good spa, and get them soaked off, not filed.

Also, it won't damage your nail unless youre picking it off... the UV used is not enough exposure to cause damage. Thanks dr. Oz for creating panic... if youre still worried about UV many nail techs have switched to led anyhow. I've read some excellent studies on this.
