Tarte has a waterproof Amazonian Clay line. If you are a MUA by trade, I wouldn't know what would be your best initial purchase, but I don't personally feel any single brand would suit your needs.

If you're a MUA then Mac Face and body foundation is a kit must have. It's sheer but builds well and has a wide color range. It's water resistant and photographs beautifully.

I'm not a MUA, but I've done a lot of research, I don't think one brand is best. As for foundation, I've heard great things about RCMA, Cinema Secrets, Mehron, Face atelier, and MUFE (especially F&B).

I agree with Lexi, no one brand is better for starter kits than another. Tarte's Amazonian Clay line is wonderful, I absolutely love it, however I would shop around more before settling on Tarte. MUFE, Too Faced, UD, Benefit, NARS.. there are so many options out there!
I would suggest reading the Building Your Kit series in the editorial section. it covered absolutely everything for those wanting to become a mua.

It depends on what you need/ want your make up wknt look half as good as it should it you don't start with good skin so make sure you have a good skin care routine. For eyes make sure you have a good primet I Love Urban Decays Primer Potion or Too Faced Shadow insurance. For eyeshadow you can't go wrong with UD. I would start off with Naked Basics and/ or UDs Naked pallet. Naked one is warm bronze tone. Naked two is cool taupe toned and Naked 3 is rose toned. I love for foundation is Tartes 12 hour Amazonian clay foundation. Make sure you go to your local sephora to get match the right color. A good face poweder is Urban Decay De slick pressed powder its translucent. And makesure you are using good makeup brushes too other wise your makeup won't look as good as you would like it too. For starters Eco Tools ( you can find them at Target or Wal-mart) are great quality and not that much money. Hope this helped!

Sorry don't know if you are just starting out or if you are a MUA looking for a good beginner kit. my post was more towards a beginner in makeup in general.
