Try chopping garlic and putting it in your basecoat. Leave it for 7-10 days and then feel free to apply

Sally Hansen has a hard as nails strengthener that's maybe about $3. I use it either as a base coat or as just a regular clear polish look.

The garlic smell goes away when the polish dries. Have you had a physical recently? I ask because you mentioned that your nails have stripes; discoloration, texture changes, ridges/dents can all be signs of health issues (some serious). Maybe get a checkup just to be safe?
