I spray this (see picture) all over my roots, flip my head upside down, blowdry fully and when I tip my head back my hair is like a mane but it won't stay like that so I hairspray my hair will its upside down. You can add mousse too if you feel you need it.
There's shampoos and conditioners you can buy that add volume. I know Swartzoff?? :S have a root powder that is meant to be great and its around 4 euro.

L'Oreal Ever- makes a thickening shampoo and conditioner, and a thickening tonic. It won't actually make your hair thicker, but will give the illusion of thicker hair. Got2B Volume Powder works great^. I would get some clip in extensions too like the others suggested. Layers also can help make hair appear thicker.

You're right with the right cut, products and tips you can give the illusion of volume and thickness.
- Cut: to get maximum fullness hair shouldn't be longer than a little past shoulders with minimal layering..if layered should be around face. Styles such as bobs and lobs work well, but if you opt for longer layers around face only.
Products: Volumizing & Lift are key words to look for. Volumizing shampoo and conditioner that won't weigh hair down. Styling products that plump, thicken and/or lift.
Great products for thin hair:
- Shampoo & Conditioner: Pureology Pure Volume Shampoo & Conditioner
Kerastase Resistance Bain De Force Shampoo
Kerastase Resistance Substance Constructive Leave-in Conditioner
- Hairspray: Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hair Spray
Kerastase Resistance Double Force Hairspray
- Styling: Redken Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder
- Styling: Sexy Hair Root Pump Plus Humidity Resistant Volumizing Spray Mousse
- Styling: TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost Spray
- Styling: Kerastase Resistance Volumactive Mousse
- Styling: Kerastase Resistance Lait Volumintense
