Highlights for Black Hair?

I have black hair, and I wanted to add some highlights, but I don't know what colour to add. I don't want to use blonde because it would be too light, but dark brown seems like it wouldn't show up in my hair. I need some help!
Also, what hair dye should I use that's gentle on the scalp, but is long lasting and permanent?
And where exactly should I add highlights? I don't want awkward steaks only on the outside (if that makes sense)...

To get curls:
wash hair *optional*
brush
dry
french braid
wait until fairly damp or dry
take out braid
ENJOY CURLS.💋

You SHOULD NOT use bleach if you are doing highlights by yourself for the first time. Hair bleach is not kind to your hair OR scalp!
