I use a curling wand. It depends on what kind of curls I want on how I do it. I always point it down when I use it but if I want big loose curls I take bigger sections. If I have the time I start with the bottom layer and go back to front in pretty small sections. For big loose ones I'll still go back to front, but I'll take much bigger sections, about 3 or 4 on each half of my head.

How big are your wands? And tapered or just straight down?

I use a curling iron, but I don't use the clamp. I basically use it like a curling wand. I have an actual curling wand but the iron works a lot better.
I wear extensions so I curl my hair in "layers."
I put the first weft in near the nape of my neck and curl it. The direction I curl depends on the style I want. Usually I go for "Kardashian" waves, so I curl all my hair AWAY from the face.
After I curl a section, I immediately put it in a plastic roller. This is going help the hair stay curled longer. I use huge rollers on the underneath and back of my hair and smaller ones around my face.
I repeat over and over until my whole head is full of rollers. At this time I will go do my makeup or get dressed or whatever. Then I take all the rollers out. Sometimes the curls look a little too structured but resist the urge to brush through them- that's just going to ruin all your hard work.
I flip my head over and shake it around to help "loosen" the curls. I have my hair done in the style right now and the curls have barely fallen at all since 5:30am. (It's 1pm now where I am)
