What bothers me is that is most of people that refer to themselves as gurus barely do any makeup related videos, they just do tags. a bunch of those so called gurus are just young girls who get lucky and do any video just to gain subscribers and not to spread valuable info. this sounds so cynical.

I'm in agreement with Michelle. I watched Michelle Phan years ago before she became MICHELLE PHAN lol I love her then and her videos have gotten better. Some of them do conform. It's a group of really popular gurus. We all know them. They are all very similar, yet different in their own ways. And a lot of guys coming up behind them are doing the same things making YouTube kinda robotic. They are all products and words that are repeated in the same way.
For example, how many times have you heard...
"I'm applying this primer so the eyeshadow has something to stick to."
That's fine but it makes me mad that many "gurus" just take common knowledge and voice it and call themselves gurus. Like white in the waterline making the eyes bigger is just sooo obvious at this point. I look for vids that I learn new info from but the same tips repeatedly.
Sorry for the rant lol. I'm an aspiring "beauty guru" and I want to change the social norms of the YouTube beauty community.

I feel like the beauty side of YouTube is all the same old stuff and the videos just don't intrigue me like they used to. However, I feel that other sides of YouTube are now really awesome and are getting better while the beauty side is just getting... Bland. There are a select few beauty guru's that I still like but most of them... Nah... I can unsubscribe.

I find these videos should be about fun. love for what they do...however all I seem to see lately are these girls doing it for the money..

Guru?? What's a guru? I see a lot of teenagers lerning makeup calling themselfs "gurus". It's insane, ridiculous. A lot of crap.

Symone you're right about how Michelle Phan changed and became MICHELLE PHAN; her old videos were so helpful and honest, now she barely speaks and I feel like its the same makeup technique with different colors.

I think while they're really interesting before they get famous. Then they're boring and just try to sell products. It's pathetic and not interesting. I really do love watching What In My Purse videos though. (:

Wayne Goss is my favorite :P
I don't know if he falls under that title but he's amazing at makeup!!

I really like some of them! There's a lot of teenagers doing the same things over and over and calling themselves gurus. My favorites are grav3yardgirl mayamiya and goldiestarling :)

Your funny Velen, By now I think anyone that loves makeup or Beautylish has gotten the real idea how how to use certain products.I say if you watch some and noticed the same wrong techniques being spread it's because pretty much they watch each others videos lol and just spread it like wild fire, Hence the YouTube face! They all have the same look (Capuchin monkey highlight) and the list could go on..But this is not to say that they're not real artist that have valuable lessons it's just took awhile for people to noticed who was legit and honest and actually was about the art versus trying to be cute.

I don't like it when YTubers start out only discussing cosmetics/skincare and then start branching off into clothes and promoting their direct sales business (for example jewelry is notorious). If I want a mix bag I'll seek such channels on my own. But pitching their direct sales companies really get under my skin and if it gets to be annoying I unsubscribe.

While I know there are a lot of gurus out there on youtube, (Including myself), I look for people I can relate to, have videos for all levels of understanding of makeup, and people who keep things fun. I think a big part of being a good guru is having product knowledge and also being yourself.

I was watching some "gurus" on YouTube last night and was thinking that to! I swear this one had a "highlighting and contouring" video. NO JOKE she used bronzer and was wearing a foundation way darker than the rest of her body and then started laughing about how white her arm and hand was compared to the makeup and she was like I know my makeups to dark I don't care who you are or if your a trained professional I like it this way. I then realized any one of us could be "gurus"

Delaney are you talking about BATALASH or whatever she's called hahahaha omg I know!! I watched that recently and was like 'wtf, you look so muddy, how are girls looking up to you?' I love her personality but god her skills aren't amazing for someone who's supposed to be 'teaching' others. I only watch the 'gurus' for inspiration, not for tips (except for Wayne, I love that man <3) but I've stopped really watching since before Valentines day because I was so sick to death of 'VALENTINES LOOK WITH NAKED PALETTE 3' they ALL did it it drove me crazy!! Nikki tutorials is amazing, but she's become quite repetitive too lately I think.

I don't take the videos that seriously - they're something fun to watch while I'm on the elliptical or whatever, and I always love a new technique or product review or whatever. What I love is the personalities - Kandee J is amazing to watch, she has such a positive energy and I always finish watching her videos in a better mood than when I started. And I like some of the older ladies, but some of the younger ones are good too. it's all about personality for me. I don't expect too much and enjoy being occasionally pleasantly surprised. But for me, it's all about fun, not much more than that.
