I'm new to makeup and I'm finding it hard to tone my makeup down for everyday wear. How can I take my makeup looks from night out to day in the sun?

Depends on how natural/toned down you want your makeup to be. Usually for an everyday look, I personally wear my skin color shadow with a bit of brown in the crease and eyeliner. Or on other days, I just have mascara and a pink/coral lip, so it's wearable but I dont have much going on and only either my eyes or lips are the focus.
I think if you want to tone down a look you already wear often, try not to put eyeliner with your shadow for a more simple appearance, or do a simple eye thats mascara and a bit of liner on the lashline with some peachy cheeks to make yourself have a natural look of a glow.
You would do the opposite of what you do to turn daytime look to a nighttime look. You would not add as much mascara, eyeliner, and heavy shadows and not apply any bold dark lipsticks. Just apply with a light hand!
I dont know if that helped, i kind of just rambled. haha, hope it did!

Depends on how you're trying to tone it down. Does day mean neutral to you? Do you still want to wear colour?

@Sara thank you. @Tamara I would I say tone down I mean color wise.

Greens and Blues are really good Day and Night colors! What is good about those colors as well is that they go with virtually any eye color!

Whenever I am doing something that requires me to go from day to night, the easiest thing to change is your lips. A neutral eye paired first with your favorite lip gloss for day, and with a bold lip in any hue (plums, red, pinks, etc. )that coordinates with your look or skin tone for night works. Mac's Ruby Woo is a great red for women of color and of course the Urban Decay Naked Pallet should be a staple in any woman's collection.

I do a natural look for the day and go smokey at night. Also like Natasha said lipstick go from a lighter color to a bolder color.

Consider shifting your bold colours to a sheer wash for something more daytime friendly. Thiner liners, and less dramatic lashes can also really tone down a look.
If there is a technique you really like (smokey, cut crease etc), use colours with less contrast so the effect is much more subtle.

Thanks everyone. Right now I have been trying to use my Naked Palette a little bit more but even with that my Mom says I need to tone it down. Like the look on my profile picture was for a leadership conference and she said I looked like I was going to a club. Do you guys think that the look on my profile was too much for a leadership conference?

No, it does not. I would try to concentrate the shadow on the lid and crease only versus blending up. Sometimes you can even skip the highlight color... Blending the shadow up sometimes makes it look "heavy".
