So this Saturday I'm getting my hair colored red, I've had it colored red before so i can pull off red hair. But red molecules are bigger then blonde and brown so they don't grip the hair cuticle as well, do you guys (especially any of you with red hair) have any tips or advice on how to make red hair color last longer? Last time I had read I had artificial Hayley Williams in "Decode" red and I had to touch up like every two weeks.

I had red hair for a year or two, and I definitely had to dye it a lot. There is just no way to make it really stay like other colors (as you know). BUT I seriously washed my hair very few, like as in 2 times a week. It may sound gross but my hair didn't produce oil - I just washed it when it started to feel dirty, or if I used a lot of hair product on a certain day. And when I did wash it, I did it leaning over the tub in ICE cold water!! That helps, you will notice that no color comes out into the water. Also, I used a shampoo and conditioner meant for red hair, I used the John Frieda Radiant Red shampoo, but also used the Ulta brand one as well and it made no difference - which ever one is on sale at the time worked for me!! Anyway, hope that helps!!!

Also - dry shampoo is your friend, LOL. That way you don't have to feel gross if you don't wash your hair that much. It works like a charm - Batiste is my favorite!!!

try to find a sulfate free/chemical free shampoo and conditioner. the chemicals in shampoo can really fade your color.

Quantum riveting reds shampoo and conditioner. Do you do the coloring yourself? In between colors you can use Colorful Protein Color Filler #10 Red Red i love it! Also if you do the color yourself you can use this to prep your hair with! I used to use the manic panic red glaze and its does a pretty good job but i like the protein filler better! Also invest in dry shampoo i love the suave its a affordable and smells really good i only shampoo my hair maybe twice a week usually only once a week!

Go and purchase WEN cleansing conditioner on Amazon or the Chaz Dean website. I also have a rinse, eventhough your's is perm, it never washed out my color and still hasn't;I even use it on my extensions to improve the body and to keep the color, if I color them, in!

After you get it colored Do not wash it for two or more days, i advise using a red shampoo you can find them in all shades of red. Also washing your hair every other day or even every two days helps purchase some dry shampoo and conditioner thats the method to my madness im a faux red head also and all of that helps.

I have magenta in my hair right now and I rarely shampoo my hair. I only co-wash it every other day (If I didn't work out I would co-wash even less). Also, the less your stylist lifts your hair, the better! My stylist only lifts my hair to a dark blonde. When my hair was lifted to a platinum, the intense colour washed out in a matter of a few washes.

Tressa has a line of color maintenance shampoos called Watercolors. I LOVE these and they come in different shades depending on your shade of red! I've gone red off and on for years and ALWAYS use that shampoo to maintain my vibrant color. Also, AVEDA has a great color enhancing conditioner called Madder Root. The smell is kinda weird but I really love the color payoff.

use crazy colour to revive your shade, red hair fades faster then any other colour.

I have red now & I wash my hair ever 2 to 3 days, with cold water and a light shampoo meant for dyed hair. Also use a color enhancing conditioner. Works for me :)

So I've had bright Dr. Pepper can red hair for about 7 years now. I have to recolor every 6-8 weeks because of regrowth not fade. So here is the down low...
STEP 1 - Stop using shampoo...wet, dry, X free...whatever stop using it. All shampoo is detergent and there is no way getting around the fact that detergent is very bad for your hair and causes atleast 80% of the conditions we are using shampoos and all the other fix it products to "fix." Switch to something like Wen, or New Wash, or any other good quality cleansing conditioner. Don't go to walmart and get the herbal essence one cause it sucks and will make your hair feel gross. So when using Wen follow the directions but use less then recommended otherwise your really just wasting it and there is no point. You want to apply it pretty much like you do any other conditioner and massage or comb it in really well.
STEP 2 - We all know if you want bright red hair you have to bleach/lighten it. the only kind I recommend is Pravana Pure Light Power Lightener. Use Vol 20 on your roots/new growth and anything less then an inch from your scalp, use 30 vol on the rest. Never ever use 40 vol, if you want your hair lighter put on a cap and use a hairdryer to heat it up, leave it on until you like the color or until 40 minutes has passed. I go from a level 2 to a level 7 in one treatment using this method without using 40 vol. If your hair is not light enough for your liking you can wait a week and repeat. Do not do back to back bleaching/lightening it will make it extremely difficult for your hair to hold onto any hair color.
STEP 3 - Before you color use a protein filler like colorful #10, you can use a neutral protein filler but this is a chance to get an extra bump of red so why not. If you are bleaching/lightening do that before using the protein filler.
STEP 4 - Stop using temporary hair dye. You can get bright red hair with permanent hair color and a temporary color over top. I use Pravana chormasilk Bright Red Blonde 7.66, it really is the best bright red dye and it is permanent. I have tried every brand of red for the past 12yrs and this is the best.
Step 5 - When you mix your permanent hair color use 20 or 30 vol your choice and also mix in roughly 1/3-1/2 a tube of Pravana vivids Red depending on hair length. If your hair is very short you can likely use 1/4 of the tube. Mix it all up apply as normal, I leave mine on for about an hour. Then rinse out and use your wen.
Step 6 - Upkeep... I use warm water to wash my hair...I help keep it red by mixing the Pravana vivids Red into my wen conditioner when I clean my hair. Apply the wen with the dye mixed in wait 5-15 minutes then rinse. The Pravana vivids will bleed onto towels but it will wash off so don't worry, it will however stain floors, walls, etc. When you rinse your hair be aware there is no need to rinse until the water runs clean. The vivids is a temporary color and is ment to wash out, rinsing until the water is clear in this case is actually washing out your color faster. I use wen 613 and it always keeps my hair in great shape.
Thats pretty much it!! Here a pic of me like 4yrs ago...take note I am in full shade though outside in this picture. This is my normal hair color even after 6-8weeks between dying/touch ups. You can also see my roots are darker then the rest of my hair, this photo was atleast 2-3 weeks after dying my hair.
