So I've been dying my hair black for the past year or two and I desperately want to get rid of my black hair and go dirty blonde. Black hair is pretty much impossible to dye over, if I went straight from black to blonde it would look brassy...I'm not sure what the best way to go about getting my hair blonde is? I definitely want to get it professionally done, but I'm not sure if it would be best to gradually dye it a brown then go blonde, or go to a salon and get the color stripped? I heard that can be very damaging. For all you hair smarties out there, how would you recommend me going about getting from black hair to blonde?

I went from (almost) black to blonde..twice! and I learned a few lessons along the way. Allow me to share a few little gems I learned along the way.
Lesson 1: Learn how the process works. I was a complete idiot and bought two boxes of "ash blonde" color. So apparently there is a lot of green in black/dark brown color, as is in ash blonde. Green on green.. why yes, equals GREEN. My hair was a murky, digusting mess.
Lesson 2: Don't be a cheap-ass. I went to Sam's (a cheap-o place) that didn't require appointments because I was so distressed and broke, I just wanted it fixed. NOW. I should have known, looking at my "stylist's" crispy-fried, self applicated highlights that I was in big trouble. And three hours later my RONALD MCDONALD ORANGE hair was all the proof I needed that I'd made a huge mistake.
Lesson 3: Cry if you have to, then go see a pro. I paid nearly $400 for an actual pro to strip out most of the orange and bring me to blonde. It was kind of neon in some strips but it looked 1000x better. The guy literally told me if he kept processing I'd risk a chemical haircut. No thanks, I'll take highlighter highlights. After washing with a purple shampoo I finally toned it down after a week. I was also sleeping in hair masks every other night to make sure my strands survived.
SO, those lessons learned... here's what I did the second time I decided to dye my hair dark brown and then take it back to blonde...
I did it super slowly (with bleach) but I allowed myself months to get to where I wanted to be. The bleach leaves your hair orange-y enough that when you're first taking the black/brown out it cancels out the green an ash would put in. As my hair got lighter I started to tone it with Wella Ivory Lady. Eventually I got to a near-white platinum blonde.. it just took time. And after the first fiasco, I was ready to be patient!
Ok so the morals of my very long stories are these: Do your homework if you're having a pro do it and make sure they actually CAN do it... or be super careful and patient if you do it yourself. Either way- GOOD LUCK!!!

I am having the almost same issue! I naturally am a strawberry blonde you can see in my pics & now i dyed it dark red. I want my natural hair color back ASAP, problem is...im military and i cannot do highlights and my hair HAS to be one color. So if i go get a color correction at somewhere like REGIS do you think they can "not" fry my hair and get me headed in the right direction or am I out of luck?

If you're willing to lighten gradually, definitely do it. Most professional color removal products will be able to remove 2-3 levels of colour at a time. One application of black dye over my previously platinum-blonde hair lifted to a medium warm brown after one go with Paul Mitchell Backtrack (the color remover my salon uses). It can be lightened further afterwards, but it's really best to make sure the hair stays as strong as possible and retains its integrity.

@Brittinay- I took a ton of the red out of my hair by using the purple shampoo. I also make sure NOT to use any "color protectant" products! My hair still has a hint of red to it but it's nothing like it was when I first had it colored, more of a strawberry blonde/light brown.
