Hi all,
I have been getting my blonde foils in my hair at a salon but want to start doing it at home myself to save money. But last time I tried my hair went orange. I also don't want to go platinum blonde. So I was hoping someone could help me out with advice on what to use and how to do it? x x

I wouldnt do that at all, it is a terrible idea, i have attempted going blonde at home, even with the help of my mother in law who has her cosmotology license, and my hair turned orange everytime

I do my own hair all the time at home! its pretty tricky to get it right the first time and not everyones hair is ever going to be the same! Ive done blonde on my own several times and in the beginning has always been such a trial and error basis but I finally got it down. I wrote up a little bit of a guide before hand on how I did it.

and depending on how dark your hair is, you might want to try and shoot for vol. 30-40 developer. I always suggest to most people to not go above vol.30 unless you really know what you're doing.

And if ur not sure about the different peroxide levels, I also wrote one up:

sorry for the shameless plugins.

I personally never condone doing your hair at home! Trust me! I know it is not fun breaking your bank to go to the salon, but they are professionals, licensed by the state to take care of your hair for you! However, if you have been bleaching your hair at home, Sally's often carries "toners" that "tone down" unwanted orange and gold and yellow tones when the natural color has been lifted. Look at a color wheel. If your hair is an orange tone, then a blue base toner will help cancel out the orange tones and achieve the neutral blond you are looking for. Be sure to ALWAYS read the manufacturer's directions and processing time! Good luck!

don't do it yourself. I am a hair colorist and have seen people trying to do their own color jobs at home to safe money. You will end up back at the salon begging your colorist to fix it for you. Please don't try it at home:)

My suggestion as a cosmetologist....Don't do it yourself..... You will not save money that way, all you're doing is damaging it more because you are using powerful chemicals you're not trained to use...meaning you will have to pay more at a salon to get it fixed...most fixes result in traumatizing chemical cuts ( in other words..you will have to cut most of your hair off) so please don't do that to yourself

Use a highlighting kit instead of a colouring kit , because its meant to go lighten dark hair. Colouring kits are meant to make blondes blonder.
