I'm having this conversation with my best friend who has been a MAC junkie since 9th or 10th grade, (we're 22 now) and I'm trying to convince her that there's other brands with great quality yet much cheaper.
She always talks how she wants to get back into makeup heavy yet always complains how much MAC's prices are when you're on a college student budget. I don't understand. I try to tell her how their are plenty of brands that are good, you just have to take your time and do research before you start buying. But she turns her nose up at the mention of drugstore brands.
What's the hype about MAC that I'm missing out on? I feel like in the end, you're just paying for the well known name.

I agree. You can tell her that Estée Lauder owns M•A•C also owns Flirt! which is sold at Kohl's for far less.

I now own two M•A•C products and feel completely ripped off. The latest item I bought was Black Knight (a black lipstick; $14.50) and to be perfectly frank my black lipstick from Wet 'n' Wild ($2.99) is far more pigmented.

I definitely will. I owned one MAC item and it was foundation. I had it for a good month and dropped it on marble floor. Of course it broke, I was more pissed at the fact that that was $27 down the drain rather than "Oh no, my foundation!" I damn sure didn't go buy another after that.

When I first started with using foundations and eyeshadows I purchased all my stuff from Mac just because at the time I was new to makeup and that's where my friends went to get their stuff. Mac was all everybody talked about so I figured there must be something good about them. But once I learned how to apply and color match my own self I started looking for more cheaper products. I only purchase items from Mac that are my favorites like paint pots and studio fix foundation which are my top two. I do purchase eyeshadows from them but only ones that I love and feel like I haven't seen a color like it and the same with lipsticks and lipglosses. I do have to add that I do like their back to Mac program so I usually get my lipsticks, lipglosses, and eyeshadows through the back to Mac.
But I can tell you this! I love wet n wild eyeshadows and black radiance eyeshadows. I go to my wet n wild more than my Mac eyeshadows. In some cases they are I feel better than some of the Mac colors that I have. I can say that some of my Mac products have more product in their pots than my store brought products but other than thats the only difference because the quality is the same or better. I say pick and choose the items you want from the drugstore and the items you want from a department store that you feel fit you better.

I am a certified MAC hater, I also live on a student/preschool teaching budget, one of the few products I have ever used by them was from a friend because the foundation was too light for her skin! while the foundation was nice, I found that I don't need much coverage and Rimmel 25 Hour foundation works just as great for a fraction of the cost!
As for their eye shadows, unless its a gift from someone I don't even waste my time, because they can easily be duped by Wet N Wild or other drugstore brands! The limited edition hello kitty palettes are only in my collection because it was hello kitty and less to do with MAC having amazing eye shadow! haha
As for lipsticks, NYC, Rimmel, Wet N Wild, Revlon, and Covergirl have always done me good no reason to go to MAC and pay for the brand name!

I liked MAC when I first got into high-end makeup (over 10 years ago yikes!), but I have been so disappointed with the quality of stuff they're putting out and the constant limited edition collections :( I purchased several holiday things from the Glitter & Ice collection b/c I'm a sucker for winter/holiday cosmetics and I returned everything except the lipsticks! It's sad that they don't seem to care about quality. A decade ago I was in love, now I'm super disappointed :( There are so many companies like Inglot that offer broad color ranges for reasonable prices. You even have drugstore brands like SLEEK making MAC look bad at times!

I used to really buy into the MAC hype and I'll admit I do like a lot of their products, but I feel like lately a lot of drugstore brands are REALLY stepping up their game and are definitely standing as some strong competition against high end brands. I love Wet n Wild lipsticks and eyeshadows, Rimmel lip liners, ELF brushes, Sonia Kashuk (damn near everything), and L'Oreal mascaras. I'm finding less and less reason to even go to department stores anymore.
