Greetings,
I've decided I want to start wearing foundation so my makeup will look more finished. I don't wear foundation often, and I've never ventured outside the extremely theatrical paper white foundations like Manic Panic's Goth White. (Not to mention this brand is horrible quality and always looks cake-y no matter how careful I am. ) So what's a good quality brand of foundation that would work on my extremely fair skin? (Note: I'm not wearing any kind of foundation in my profile pic. That's pretty much my natural skin tone.) I've noticed with a lot of brands, their lightest shade even the "ivory" and "fair" tends to look tan on me. (I'm also inclinced towards goth/slightly theatric makeup, so I'm looking for something at or lighter than my current skin tone. But not white. I'm saving that for special occasions.) Any suggestions?

I would suggest trying MAC's Face and Body in white, I use it to lighten foundations but I've also seen people use it as-is and it turns out lovely. :) It's a pro product, but if you don't have a mac pro store near you, you can call the nearest one and they should ship it to you.

Elizabeth Arden's Flawless Finish Foundation in Vanilla is "pale" without leaning pink and a little goes a long way, you can make it look very natural or heavier coverage if needed. I also find that if you take a drugstore brand like Rimmel Clean Finish in the lightest shade and you add about a nickel size of sunblock, and mix it together, you not only get a "paler" shade but protect your skin, (keeping your porcelain complexion) and the titanium dioxide in the sunblock gives the foundation less warmth. I also think you don't necessarily need to wear foundation to look finished. If you take good care of your skin you can easily look polished with a BB cream (which generally run very light), a bit of concealer in the right spots and translucent powder lightly applied. Ask to sample it at the BB cream at the Estee Lauder counter their new one comes in very fair shades and has SPF 35.
hope that helps!
Also my blog has photos/swatches of me trying every foundation I could get my hands on :)

Illamasqua is very pale-friendly. You can also try other theatrical brands like Ben Nye, Graftobian, or Kryolan; they all go very light.
