I'm getting my first tattoo on Sunday (hopefully, if things go as planned) - Anyway, I JUST realized I have no idea what to do when it comes to aftercare & the healing process.
I'm willing to purchase different products for this, so if you have any recommendations, please do share. :)
Please inform me w/ everything you know! I'm a total neeeeewb. :D

Unscented lotion and dial soap... Don't do the diaper rash creams... Since some have petroleum in them and that can lift the pigments out during the healing process. Abstain from the gym until the skin peels and is smooth again, you don't want to sweat the pigments out either! Good luck, and bring an iPod if your tattoo is a large piece... =]

When you go and get your tattoo, the artist will give you a ton of instruction on aftercare and healing products (: I use lubriderm unscented lotion on mine and my tattoos healed up just fine. Other than that, pretty much what @Alyson said.
Oh, and be sure you eat a good meal beforehand! Good luck! <3<3

Use Unscented anti bacterial soap to clean it with. The kind of comes in a bottel with a pump. Do not use any kind of bar soap. Use aquafore for a few days to keep it from drying out, and then after a few days use Unscented lotion. I would recommend aveeno. I have 3 tattoos and this is what I have done to care for then each time.

I have my left arm sleeved (as well as tattoos everywhere else) and the lotion I like is Aveeno (unscented.) It really helps soothe the skin and cut down on the itchiness that can come with a healing tattoo (anyone else get that?) Also wash the area at least a few times a day with unscented antibacterial soap for the first week or so. Have fun!

Wow really? I heard stuff like A&D ointments were needed & stuff like that - Just normal unscented soap & unscented lotion?

I used A&D but anything unscented that is very hydrating should be fine. It is going to be sore for a few days but its totally worth it :)

this is going to sound terrible, but when i got my tats, i used an antiseptic cream that people commonly use for nappy rash. lol. in australia, the cream is called 'bepanthen'. i think in the uk, they have sudocrem. not sure what the equivelant is over in the states. but it did the job! :) my tats stayed clean and no allergic reactions!

What I did:
-Only keep the tattoo covered for the first 3 hours AT MOST.
-Wash a couple of times a day with a gentle cleanser (Cetaphil, Dial, etc.)
-Apply an ointment for the first week (I used A+D)
-Use a unscented lotion or cream for the next week or two (I used Cetaphil Cream)
Everyone's regimen is different. This is how I've always done it and I have several tattoos. Good luck!

I have a big rib cage piece and a very large hip/thigh piece. By far my fave ointment is Tattoo Goo in the little tin. It makes your tattoo look awesome and also helps cut down on the itching (at least temporarily). It's going to be all pealy and itchy after a few days but that is normal. Just no picking or scratching as you will ruin your new work. When it was in the super itchy phase I would just kind of place my hand on it on top of my clothes and rub in light circles (really no pressure just acknowledging the itch and I was wearing fitted leggings) and that seemed to help.
Do NOT use a bath puff or washcloth while your tattoo is healing. I would just get my hand really sudsy and use that. I use the dove sensitive skin bar soap normally. I wouldn't use anything super fragranced. I washed it on my normal shower schedule.
I still use the tattoo goo from time to time even tho they are healed. It really makes the colors vibrant. But mostly I use the generic aveeno out of the shower.
Pack snacks and post pics!!

Uh, yeah the first few days unscented lotion ain't gonna cut it you would have to apply it constantly because the tattoo sucks it up.
1. Anti-Bacterial Soap, preferably clear and definitely unscented. (Try and wash with as hot of water as you can stand 3 times a day.)
2. Aquaphor Healing Ointment for at least 3 days while it is just starting to heal.
3. Unscented lotion after the third day, you won't need to wash it as often at this point you can apply the lotion and as long as no dirt or grime gets on the tattoo you can leave it alone.
But seriously, as many people are saying you don't need ointments it feels so much better, less irritating, and the tattoo ends up looking more vibrant when you use it. :)
Good luck.

I just got my first tattoos about a week ago. My tattoo artist recommended using Aveno lotion because it's unscented and the oatmeal helps with healing. I was using that for a couple days, but I've found that the unscented repairing moisture cream by Vaseline works better. Be careful you don't over-lotion them, because I did that and they became irritated for a day or two. I would just lotion them any time you wash your hands, or if they begin to feel tight. Whatever you do, do NOT pick them. let them peel at they're own pace. I got mine on my wrists and they peeled within four days and now they're almost completely healed (or at least they look that way). Also, they may go up and down in swelling for a few days, and become really red. Don't freak out and think they're infected unless it's oozing puss or something. It was likely they may weep a little, but thats normal. If you think they may be infected, go back to the shop and ask your artist and he/she will be able to tell you for sure.

i bought "tattoo goo". it's good for using on your tat as it's healing, as well as after to keep it vibrant.
as your tat heals, it's going to look like the ink is flaking off- it's not and it's extremely important that you dont pick at it. those are scabs and if you pull at them, you'll pull ink out of your tattoo as it heals. the artist is probably going to stress that the most.
my friend used baby diaper rash cream on her tattoo and said it worked out but you can always ask your tat artist what they recommend you use.
don't soak your tat for too long- make showers quick if you can and keep it out of chlorine pools (i got mine on my wrists in the summer so i had to keep my arms dry while in the pool- not fun lol)
also, it'll be sore for awhile. your skin is going to swell up and be tender. i feel like a lot of people that get tattoos just think you get them and that's it haha but not quite.
and, what to expect when you're getting it- depending on where (though i'd say just about anywhere is going to be uncomfortable as your first), but it's going to feel like someone taking their nails and clawing at sunburn. that's probably the best description i can come up with. it's an addicting pain though- i'm betting a lot of people can agree with me there.
this post was all over the place lol i hope it helped a bit :) what everyone is saying is super helpful!
