For brushes I use Sephora's brush cleaner on a regular basis, but for deep cleaning I use olive oil to loosen up the makeup, and then follow with two or three washes with baby shampoo to gently wash away the oils. I remember seeing this from a yt guru, and I have been doing it ever since.
EDIT.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JENRwWaKaE&feature=relmfu This is prob. dead on with what I do minus the sponge thing. I just use my palm for baby soap, and a paper plate to hold the olive oil.

Brushes and sponges: I use Mona Lisa's Pink Soap. This not only washes but conditions the brushes. Found at craft stores in the same area where artist brushes are at. With sponges after I wash I will squeeze out all the excess water then soak the sponges in a dish of alcohol. Let the sponges absorb the alcohol then squeeze out the excess. I do that so the alcohol help dries out the water but also to disinfect the sponges.

for my brushes i use the MAC brush cleaner. if its for myself, i clean my brushes every few days. just cause i know where they have been, and im the only one using it. if im using it on a client, i clean them right after i am done doing their makeup application.

Johnson & johnsons Baby shampoo and warm water. Cheap, gentle and effective. I also have Sonia kashuk's brush cleaner ($6 ish at Target), but I rarely use it. If I want to switch eye shadow colors, a brush cleaner is great for spot cleaning and dries really fast so you can finish your look. Hope that helps! xoxo

I use Dettol Antiseptic Liquid Disinfectant and olive oil. Dettol is mild and it can do without olive oil but i just love to add extra goodness to my brushes.
Pour both products in a small plate, dab the brush on the products and swirl 'em around on my other hand palm [a pre-cleaned one, of course!] ;)

i use j&j baby shampoo and warm water also. i have mac's brush cleaner and i find i go through it really fast when i'm washing and it leaves behind an alcohol type of smell. my brushes aren't as soft either.
for spot cleaning though, i do use the mac cleaner. i added a spray nozzle so i can spray some on a paper towel and swirl my brush in it to pull off the color quickly.

I use antiseptic and olive oil for the deep cleaning, and on daily basis I use a wipe or Mac's brush cleaner :-)

Spot cleaning: brush cleaner. I've been using Smashbox's for the last while, but I'm going to be using MAC's once it runs out.
Deep cleaning: baby shampoo

I used to have a video tutorial on how I cleaned my brushes but I removed it and will be refilming it soon. For now, I mix my gentle foaming makeup remover with a bit of shampoo and water. That way all the makeup gets removed. I gently wipe them with my hands and then rinse them out. Then I use tape to make brush guards.

It´s an interesting clip, I have had the same problem. I found an interesting article ( http://beauty-tips-and-tricks.com/tips-to-completely-clean-your-makeup-brushes/ ) where I read that my brushes could be the main reason for my issues. I am cleaning my makeup brushes thoroughly since then, so far no pimples on my face :)
